How did your dog get its name?

Just wondering about this...

Muffin's owner had already named her when I bought her. She didn't know it yet, but I didn't change it, because she was tiny then and it fit her. Now she's huge, and I wish I'd changed it, lol

I named Abbey after where I had my first dog cremated - Abbey Glen Pet Memorial Park.

And I named Mufasa after Simba's father in the movie The Lion King, because Mufasa's so tiny and it's such a big name, lol.

How did your dog get his/her name?

Boo had that name when I rescued him and he was 3.5 years old. I've modified it a little -- Boo-Boo.

Latte looked like milk so the name suited him. Also, I was grieving over my GSD, Lance when I got him. Only 2 letters changed.

Harley
He was named after a pony that my sister rode on a trail ride when we were younger!

Abby
I'm pretty sure my sister came up with the name based on a character called Abby, from Dawsons Creek. I didn't like that show but I thought the name 'Abby' was very pretty. Abby was originally named Chloé when we got her, but she really didn't suit the name at all.

We took forever to pick a name for Abby, because my mum didn't like any of the name suggestions my sister and I made. So, Abby had to go to the vet for a check-up, and she didn't have a name at the time. My mum told the vets she was called 'Baby', and so that's what they call her all the time now, at the vet. It's funny.. because if you rearrange the letters in Baby, you can spell Abby!

Jesse James was nameless when I adopted him (well, he wasn't really but no one could find the idiots who abandoned him to ask them what it was)...I wanted a boys name, but nothing stupidly macho for such a small dog. I decided on Jesse because I'd heard quite a few men called that and it fit him (a boys name but not overly macho), but because he's a fluffy, pretty boy (much to his disgust) everyone kept calling him a her...so after some thought I ended up adding the "James" on the end for two reasons 1: to make sure people knew absolutely that he was a boy and 2: I figured that I busted him out of prison, so he's my little outlaw.

My BF was being extremely difficult picking a name for River - we spent the first 24 hours calling him "puppy" which was driving me nuts!!

Anyway the BF is a huge Texas Hold 'Em Poker fan and there's a card there called the "river" card (which is the last card dealt in a hand) - and I liked it because it was different and it just suited him so well.

Gosh...

When my parents brought home a little basenji puppy 8 years ago, she was black and white. Like a cow. My brother wanted to name her Bessy. I vetoed that.

Now, as most of you know, basenjis are known as barkless dogs. We hadn't figured out that this didn't mean mute just yet.

My younger brothers were watching a children's video put out by Veggie Tales. It had a silly song on it called "The Song of the Cebu."

In it, they discuss cebus... and describe them as "kind of like a cow." One of the cebus featured in the video is mute as well. Cebu it was, but I altered the spelling to Saboo.

Hippo... she just is. I get really tired of common names for animals (thus kittens at the shelter named Arugula and Mr. Dynamite), so she had to have a different name. It was a toss-up for a bit between Rigby and Hippo, and Hippo won out.

What's funny to me (and I just realized this today, actually), is that in that goofy kids song about cebus, they talk about a boy in a canoe and his three cebus and also a hippo. Just... a very strange coincidence.

EDIT: And just so I don't seem quite so nuts, please feel free to go watch the goofy video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZsltdm97vE

Happy - it was her name in the litter, it suited her so well I kept it.

Perky - she went through lots of names before we settled on "Perky", she got it because she is so..well... perky lol

Ripley - named after the show "Ripleys Beleive it or not" because her was our 4th dog and at the time we though we were crazy, so we called him "Ripleys Believe it or not, we got another dog"

Misty - it suited her lol its short for "Mistletoe Mischeif" because my parents paid for her in place of a christmas gift, and she was so mischeivious lol

Blair - it was his name in the litter, we kept it because it was funny lol he is from the same breeder as Happy. its funny because a dog named Blair was offered to my mom right after her divorce with my dad, my moms boyfriend before she met my dad, so happend to bare the name "Blair" the timing made the name hilarious so we kept it as a joke lol

Electra - came with it, I didnt get her till she was 6 month old, I could have changed it but I chose not to, we mostly call her "Leck" and "Baby" though.

Rusty - came with it, is old family who still visits him renamed him Rusty when he was given to them, when they got him his name was "Cujo" lol

You know, I never got around to asking the cucumber.

I honestly believe that the answer is yes- there doesn't seem to be an animal by the name of cebu. And really, in terms of size, the "cebu" in the presentation appear to be zebu.

Missie my dad came up with while randomly naming off names (I think on the way to pick her up). He was just suggesting kind of cutesy doggie names, so it has no meaning, unfortunately. I altered the spelling and added Mae to make it unique (Missie, spelt that way, was also a character in a series of books I loved at the time).

Aysa I altered the spelling from "Asa" to make it look more like a male or female name (it's identified as both). I chose it before bringing Aysa home, and I liked the meaning, "healer" (or "physician" I later discovered). Because I'm planning to do animal-assisted therapy with him I wanted to have a name that reflected that and was unique. It's also a Biblical name (the name of a king in the Bible), and that's where I found it.

I didn't name my foster, Oliver, and am not sure how his family chose it.

Lets see.

Harrison Hans "Harry": We named him after the street we got him on, and my mom wanted him to have a swedish middle name!

Bradley "Brad": Named after "Brad" from the rocky horror picture show. (We had a Janet too).

Elliot: Thats my brothers middle name, I guess my mom couldn't think of anything at the time.

Daggett: She looks like "Daggett" from the Angry Beavers LOL

Cartman "Carty": Named after Eric Cartman from South Park.

Charlotte: I was obsessed with the band Good Charlotte at the time.

Prince Peanut "Nutters": I have no idea why I named him that to be honest.

Jannahmel Grace "Jannah": Named after two of our dachshunds who died the year we got her. Janet and Hannah. And then my mom added "Mel Grace" for me.

Bjorn Cujo Bear Stubbs "Bjorn": Bjorn means Bear in Swedish...and the rest was just added on lol

Rees-esitate "Reese": Her mother, Jannah, suffocated her when she was 2 days old, and we had to give her CPR.

Just Bob "Bobbo": We hadn't named him yet, and he had to go to the E-Vet for parvo (stayed there 10 days) and the vet asked us what his name was so he could have something to call him, and write on his paper work, and Bob just popped in our head..lol. And it stuck.

Lucy: We named her after Lucy from 50 First Dates, because the next day Lucy would always forget the progress we made the day before with her fear aggression.

Dutchess had her name when we got her; we didn't want to make things worse by changing her name. Bad enough she lost her family.
Zuki is short for Suzuki. Yup. No kidding. My penalty for bringing home a puppy while my husband was at a bike race (without asking) was that he got to name him. Thank goodness he went with Zuki; cause his other choice was Tank!????!
