Renee, Roxie's Mommy

So my boss and his ex-wife are one of these people that gets the kids (3 of them 14, 12, 10) anything they want whenever they want. The kids don't take care of their stuff (2 ipods went in through washing machine) and they just replace it. Their mother is one of these people that thinks animals are disposable and will get rid of them when she is tired of them.
Anyway, they have a golden retreiver that is about 10 yrs old and is very well behaved. Two years ago, they got their oldest a Yorkie. As of today, the Yorkie isn't potty trained and just pees whenever and whereever she wants. I had to arrange for the carpets in the house to be cleaned and as expected, they were soaked with pee and mildew. This just disgusts me on so many levels. Now, the now oldest wants a "Golden Cream" and is BEGGING her dad to get her one, promising that she will take on full responsibility (yeah right, like she does with the Yorkie?). She has also been told that "golden creams" are rare and hard to find. I don't know anything about this "new" breed, is it a mix between a Golden Retreiver and a Yellow Lab? What are their exercise needs? These kids are already over scheduled between baseball, basketball, volleyball, karate, tennis, paino... When would anyone have time to exercise this dog? I forsee destructive behavior in their future if my boss caves. I think I need to have a serios sitdown with my boss and let him know my thoughts. Luckily, I have the kind of relationship that I can do this. I really hope that he listens and doesnt give in. I'd hate to see another dog end up in rescue. |

Interesting they look like light goldens...
I agree with you though. If they can't potty train a yorkie then they really don't deserve to have another dog or animal in the house. It will only complicate things worse. Especially since it will most likely be the wife's issue to deal with and if she's not pet savy now... UGH! |

Hm, I'm assuming its a purebred golden, just a VERY light colored (hence the name 'cream'). We had two goldens come into work that were a creme color, ALMOST white. They were gorgeous, but of course this is breeding away from the standard.
I would do as you already thought and sit down to talk with your boss. If you have that kind of relationship with him, I think that's wonderful. Maybe try to steer them towards a breed that would suit their lifestyle a little better if you cannot get them away from getting another dog. |

I agree with the other posters that a "Golden Cream" is nothing more than a light Golden. This child is being fooled if she thinks she is getting something rare. It is a color that is not preferred according to the standard, but it is by no means rare - I see it quite often, and while the color does pop up in the pedigrees and litters of a few good breeders, I tend to see it more often out of poorly bred litters. I've heard them described as "Golden creams" before; it's a marketing ploy
.Best of luck with whatever you decide to do! It sounds like there isn't a ton of time for a new dog in that household just now, especially a very young puppy. |

So I talked to my boss this morning. He SAYS he isn't going to get her one, but that doesn't mean her mother won't get her one. He also swears that this "Golden Creme" is pure bred. Here is the website for the breeder (obviously a BYB): http://goldencreams.blogspot.com/
I told him that he needed to take his daughter to the Golden Retreiver Rescue and have her talk to them about what happens to these dogs when they don't get enough attention & exercise. He said that would only make things worse and that she would then want to rescue one. I told him rescue probably wouldn't let them take one and that if I was a breeder and knew them like I do, I wouldn't let them have a puppy. They just don't have the time. I think I'm gonna send him the rescue link anyway. Oh, and I reminded him about the Yorkie not being potty trained and he blamed the dog for "not getting it". I quicky reminded him that it's not the dog's fault that she doesn't know to go outside, it's the HUMAN's fault for not teaching it and being consitant. Man, I hope he sticks to his guns and says NO. |

I hope he sticks to his gun too. I've been looking around a Lab breeders, and it seems even dogs that are obviously BYbred still have their health tests (heart, OFA, and Penhip) done on them. I saw nothing about health testing on the site...maybe mentioning the potentail health problems (hip dysplasia!) could be enough to have him look for another breeder?
