Do you have a dog with a job?
One of the topics in the Debate Section sparked my curiousity about how many owners on here have working dogs, or a dog with a job...The results should be interesting!
I personally do. I own a Siberian Husky named Oceano and together we're involved in sprint racing, a form of dogsledding. When there's no snow we do scootering or carting although I haven't been in a race with one of them yet. In the future I'd like to start ski-joring. |

schutzhund, no sch titles yet, but should have a sch1 after this summer. Things were progressing nicely last year, and then we moved, I lost my club and it started getting cold and snowy. She's an amazing tracker. OB needs to be cleaned up, proper positions, she likes to forage ahead and sit crooked on the fronts. Protection needs work too. hold and bark always needs work in some way and she's far more calm on her grip than when i got her, but that still needs work. If I can get a schI on her being my first dog I'll be very happy, as will my breeder.

Yup. Well, rather, I have a working dog in the making. Dakota is training to be a therapy dog, and he is going to Tucson to be evaluated for his herding "abilities" and to see if he enjoys herding. He will start basic, 'modified' (not much jumping) agility training in July, and should be in full-fledged agility training by December 2005 if he gets the OK from the vet.
He also has a new job (He starts tomorrow, wish us luck!) as a demo dog at an OB class here, which I'm excited about, especially considering that he's only 7 months old and already, according to his trainer, capable of earning his CD. So, who knows, maybe there is a future for him in Obedience or Rally. Ripley is a nearly fully trained agility dog (Um. Weeeeell, except for that darned teeter, he will NOT teeter) but he will never compete. It's just backyard fun for him. So, his only real job is to amuse us. |

Yes, my four dogs all have jobs ranging from agility, obedience and tricks to entertain me...to performing natural abilities that I can analyze and study for my intellectual enrichment from any place in my house or out on the trail.
They all have a duty to not only entertain me at my whim, but to cuddle with me and keep me warm on the couch in the evening. They must not whine or wiggle too much, but I can if I want to. The Chihuahuas main expertise is snuggling. But they are also proficient at spinning, tossing, attacking and killing pieces of kibble. They are on high alert at all times with their specialized, bionic hearing. They are only practicing on the kibble. The real thing will happen one day and they'll be ready for it. Bonnie, my Lab's main responsibility these days is sleeping and throwing out hair in tufts while she sleeps. She does take a walk during the day for her recreation but the rest of her time is mine. She is duty bound to keep my waist line trim by creating an enviornment where I am continually bending over with the dust pan several times a day after sweeping the whole floor. Lyric, my Doberman is my main training project. I am learning how to be trained by him. We are so bonded and I'm so in love with this slob, I don't know how I lived before without him. He can do anything....you name it...agility, obedience, tricks. He's just so dang smart and full of life. Every day he reminds me how wonderful it is to be alive because he just exudes this out of every pore in his body. |

Well, Trish is going to be a guide dog! Of course, she won't be with me when she's a guide dog. Does that count?
Gabby is my trick dog. She loves learning tricks and knows a lot of them. |

Boone's number one job is to be a constant companion for me. Side jobs would include, and not limited to: harrassing Smokey, birds on the fence, neighbors cats; begging for food; killing all his available toys, sometimes all at once; being a clown for attention from me and visitors; and last but not least, keeping me nice and toasty at night.
