Make Your Own?

Every now and then I see people asking about and comparing different brands of dog leashes and such to find the best one. HAs anybody tried making their own??? A few days ago me and my bf drove out to a leather shop and picked up a few strips of already treated and tanned leather. We also picked up some rivets and snaps. Yesterday my bf showed me how to make a braided leather leash by taking apart an old one and having me put it back together over and over until i could do it without thinking about it. Then we brought out the new leather we got, I cut it in half and the first one my bf guided me in making a 2ft leash but the second 2ft leash i made all on my own! It was surprisingly easy! And the result it incredibly strong!!! The first leash and collar my bf made got sent down to a friend of ours who does PP training with American Bull Molossers. He says it is now the only leash he uses with his dogs. I am hoping to make more soon. I already have plans to make a leather martingale collar. Its sooooo much cheaper than buying it at the store or onlie. Plus making it yourself you know the quality. I will get pics soon and post them but Im curious if anybody else has ever tried making their own leather collars and/or leashes???

Nop, but I'd be interested in learning !! Leather leads and collars are spendy around here and ordering them isn't any cheaper... I'd love to see pictures !

I would love to see a pic of the leash, it sounds like the ones they use in Neyla's obedience class. I've been trying to find a 2ft to 3ft leash for certain training exercises but am having a hard time. Then one day in class the trainer handed me a braided one on loan. I was thinking, it looks like they made this and I actually happen to like it a lot better than Neyla's nylon leash and leather one, as it's more comfortable. I would be interested in learning if you have pics with instructions.

In agility we all make slip leashes. Not really difficult to make, you make the rope come together in a circle, so you can flip it through. Just like a choke chain pretty much, but 6-8 feet long and rope instead of chain. Your leather ones sound much nicer. Please post pictures

I've come across some homemade leashes from working at the kennels, but nothing as nice as the sound of the leather ones you made.

A leather martingale collar would be nice...the only ones I've seen have been nylon. I like leather better.

Jeeze, they look better then the ones I've seen !! Great job ! For me, they look hard lol... Is there a site with instructions on how to make these ? I love using '1 and 2' leads. They work well with training ! I'd also love to make collars, since we seem to go through 1per dog each year- it'd save us some money !!

Ilovemypup, thanks! they werent expensive at all! Both of them together only cost about $20-25. If you were to go to a pet stroe though im sure it would be that mush if not more for just ONE.

PAwsnclaws, thanks! Im not sure if there is a tutorial on the internet...likely...My bf just discovered how to do it by taking apart an old braided leash he had for his female AmBull who recently passed away. Once he had a good idea of how to do it he showed me and got me to practice on the old braided leash too. I dont even know how I would try to describe it....something that is definately better understood if shown

Those are nice and look much much better than anything you would see in a pet supply store. I'm going to have to Google and see if I can find out how make something similar.
