Maybe it's because of me?
The house next door to me used to be rented out, but the owners have since decided (after the previous tenants left), to just put the house up for sale. Well the market around here is crap right now, and it's already a hard time to sell, but I think I'm making things worse.
Every time there is an open house, about half an hour before hand, the agent comes over and asks if I can keep PJ and Tysa in the house for the duration of the showing. Which is fine, I can understand that an happily oblige, provided it's not a 6 hour long open house. Usually they are only 3-4 hours. But the open houses usually just result in nosey neighbours checking it out. On a few occasions now, people have pulled into the driveway of this house (which I share a driveway with), when I was out with the dogs. And naturally they *woof woof woof* for a minute or two. On once occasion, the people didn't notice the dogs till they got out of their car, but when they heard and saw them, they got right back into their car, and sped off. Another couple of families have come, and I've said, oh they're just being dogs, they're friendly, really. And I usually get a few "Yeah right's". But the most recent family came while I was out with the dogs. A couple with 3 kids. They were about a half hour early for the agent showing up, so they all came into the yard to play with PJ and Tysa. They loved it, especially the kids (the wife wasn't so thrilled about PJ's droolies though.....haha). We chatted for a bit too, and they said they had a Doberman and a Pug. I WANT them to get the house! ![]() Anyway, is it me and my dogs that are part of the reason the house isn't selling? I mean the market sucks, but the house has been re-done and from what I hear, looks incredible, and they aren't asking much for in really. I'd hate to think I might be deferring people, but I can't predict when the house is going to be shown (besides the open houses), and if the dogs are out I'm almost always with them and try and let people know the dogs are friendly, and once they get used to you being a familiar face, they won't do the *woof woof* upon you coming and going like they do with strangers. Ack, I hate feeling guilty about something I don't have much control over. |

Hmm... It could be..
That would stink if that's why.. Maybe it is the reason and maybe it isn't , my way of thinking would be that if they don't want the house because of your rottie cuties , too bad for them! But then I also see what your saying.. Hope the doggy people get the house! ![]() -ali |

NOT having neighbors isn't always such a bad thing
I wouldn't worry about it too much. If your dogs are keeping them away, i'm sure you wouldn't want them there anyway, they'd cause nothing but trouble for you anyway. The right people will come along. |

Don't think of it like they're keeping people from buying the house, think of it as if PJ and Tysa are helping in the selection process.
You want neighbours who like your dogs and who are, if not dog people, then at least dog friendly people. Cass. |

I think the dogs are actually doing you a favour in making sure you get a neighbour that actually likes dogs (and maybe even has dogs of their own). There's nothing worse than a neighbour that hates dogs and will find the tiniest thing to complain about just for the sake of it.

At least whoever buys the house will know there are dogs next door. And I agree- could save you problems in the long run.
In in a depressed market, there could a number of reasons for a house not selling. From a poor job market, or being over priced or even just qualifying buyers. |

I seriously doubt you are the cause of that house not selling. There are many many factors that play into buying a house. Anywho you don't want someone to move in next door to you that doesn't like dogs right? So if anything you're helping weed out the potentially bad neighbors

I wouldn't worry to much. My house has been on the market for 9 months.
It is a buyers market, and if a buyer doesn't like what they see they are off to the next house. There are over a hundred homes in my area in the same price range as my house, so they have plenty to look at. No one has come to see my house for 43 days. Consider your neighbors lucky that they even get someone to look. I knew the market was going to be bad when we put the house up for sale, but I didn't expect this. If I knew then, I would of put my house up for next to nothing to get it sold. |

I was just thinking. Perhaps hiding your dogs (like the real estate agents told you) is the wrong thing to do, for the sake of the people looking to buy the house.
Surely people would want to be fully aware of who lives next door to them before they buy? It might be in both your and the new buyer's best interest to tell the agents that 'no' you won't put the dogs away. But stay out with them to make sure they don't go overboard with the barking. ![]() Cass. |

Yeah, I think you're all right. If the people who buy don't like my dogs, there'll be problems from the start. I guess I just don't want to be the reason or part of it that someone doesn't sell their house, ya know? But on the other hand, I was here first! So ptthhhttt.
It's not like my two are disruptive. As for the open houses, I kinda like having them in the house, they always woof a few times when someone pulls into the driveway, and there's just so many people in and out looking, that it can get annoying, even for me. |

I have been trying to post for the last hour and keep getting called away from the computer (LOL). I would not listen to the sales agent, she's there to sell the house and get her a commission cheque. If the new neighbours are not dog lovers, they can cause you problems. So it's good that PJ and Tysa are out a small percentage of the time when there is an open house. I wouldn't keep PJ and Tysa outside a lot during the open houses, but if they have to do their business then I would let them out to do that. There are some people who are intimidated by the breed of dogs we choose to own. No matter how well behaved they are and how very rarely they ever bark. Like GSD said "NOT having neighbors isn't always such a bad thing".
It would be nice if the couple with the dobbie moved in. |

I too have a home for sale next to my home and every time I see someone over there looking at the house I let every single one of my dogs out.
The sales person did come over once and ask if I could leave the dogs in when he was showing the house and I told him flat out....no. He isn't the one that has to live there and anyone moving in will know that I have multiple dogs, if they don't like that or dislike dogs then obviously I'm not the neighbor for them. I'm not trying to be rude or stop the home from selling but I don't want anyone being surprised after the sale and a neighbor "feud" over it. |

Crossfire, thats what I use to do when people would consider renting the house next door to me. I'd let the dogs out and they would bark their heads off but thats what they do and who ever wants to move in right next to me should know it lol.

I can totally see your points everyone.
While I'll likely keep the dogs in for open houses still (cause it can be annoying with the amount of people in and out), I do think if I see the house being shown, I'll let the dogs out. If they're serious enough for a private viewing, they should understand there'll be Rottweilers living next door. Besides, if they truly like the house and have any concerns, I'm sure they'd come over and inquire about the dogs and whether or not they are friendly or a nuisance. But you all have set my mind at ease. Thank you! ![]() |
