Bad Bad Day for Heels
So today I went home at lunch to let the little doggies out and have a break. I was in the back of the apartment closing the door after letting the two crazies back in and turned around to notice that the living room was unusually well lit. Then it hit me.
:shiver: The front door had blown open and I knew Boone was right next to me but Smokey was no where in sight. I panicked. By the time, I got to the door, Smokey had galloped (yes, galloped) down the street. So I slam the door shut and take off running, in heels. In heels. Now, I'm sure all you ladies are aware of the fact that heels were not specifically designed for cross country sprinting. But that's what I did. After he heard me calling for him in my happy excited voice, Smokey bolted in the other direction, stopping only briefly to "water" various trees and shrubs. Every time I thought I'd get close enough to scoop him up, he'd dart in the other direction. I even tried running the other way to see if he'd follow. No deal. He ended up running across a kinda busy street right in front of two vehicles, one of which was a DishNetwork guy. He immediately pulled over his van and got out. He called to me to see what my dog's name was and took off after Smokey. My hero. I just couldn't keep up with the surprisingly swift dog. Smokey finally, about a 1/2 mile from my apartment, decided to stop for a potty break and my knight grabbed him up before he could take off again. Whew. I profusely thanked him, between wheezing breaths. LOL So then I had to carry Smokey's hefty behind, all 30 lbs, all the way home. Grrrr. . . LOL Suffice to say I was flat out exhausted after the ordeal. When I opened the door to the apartment, Boone was waiting for us and the two were so happy and excited that something out of the ordinary happened today. Good grief, Charlie Brown. LOL I'm just so so so thankful it wasn't worse. Flashes of horrifying scenes keep running through my oxygen deprived brain on our little jog. I'm just glad someone was willing to stop and help me. What a nice guy. So from now on, I'll be incredibly diligent in making sure the front door in bolted every time I close it. This won't be happening again, let me tell you!! ![]() |

Whew. That would have been frightning! I had a similer experience with Blackie. A couple of days after we had just started keeping the dogs kennled unless somebody is out there with them, I foolishly decided to put Rose on the leash, and let Blackie run, thinking, "Hey. If Rose sticks around when Blackie is on lead, maybe Blackie will stick around when Rose is on lead." Trust me, don't ever think that. As soon as I let Blackie off lead, he took of running right into the territory of dogs that hate him and vise versa. So I took off back to the house (we were in our feild) and told Mom what happend. So she got into the car, drove to pick up Blackie (who, BTW, was soaking wet after jumping in the creek, and was snarfing with the two Aussies that hate him). She brought him home, no big problems cause, and Blackie is now not allowed of lead unless he is tired and we are right up next to the house. lol
I'm glad everything turned out ok, and I thank that guy who helpped you out big time. |

Yeah, and you know, out of both the dogs, I figured it'd be Boone the one that would bolt and not return, but he just stood there staring at me like "hey, mom, what's up with the door being open?" LOL Gooooood boy. I wish I would have had more time to praise the little guy for staying home. LOL

Eeeek that's a horrible feeling to have while running after the little escaper. I have had to do that twice with Bitty, who has NO concept of what a car can do to her, and had close calls both times. Tasmo just watches. I would almost say he gets great entertainment from it.

OMG - I'm so glad Smokey is ok!!! He probably thought it was a big fun adventure, though!!! That's so scary - and you're right about the heels - you're lucky you didn't hurt yourself in your cross-country sprint!
Cragar did that once - when he was little - I opened the basement door to take out the garbage and he bolted out. There was at least 7 inches of snow on the ground that day (nothing shoveled yet), and he took off. I was wearing slippers. Cragar was down the street before I caught up to him (he also stopped to water some trees along the way!! LOL). When we got him back home, he had a look on his face like, "can we do that again, huh, huh???" |

That must have been very scary at the time but knowing that it all turned out ok I had to laugh. I can just see you running down the street after him and him thinking it was just a big game and running away! I am sure to an outsider it must have looked very funny! I am glad it all turned out well.

I am so glad that story had a happy ending! I think that most of us have had a similar experience... I know I have, but instead of heels, I had a 2 week old baby in a snuggly on my chest! I am impressed with your heel sprint! That takes talent!
