Neighbors Dogs

We have just lived in our new place 3 months and I already can't stand our neighbors. When we first moved in I went over to introduce myself. And they both seemed to have this "we're better than you" attitude. But I just brushed it off. I actually even offered a play date for our dogs. As they had 4 dogs of their own. They have two purebred Labs, one Rottweiler, and one Jack Russel. Little did I know at the time all four dogs are aggressive.

So not long after that I noticed that they leave their dogs outside and loose unattended. And their dogs of course take off. I noticed the first hent of aggression when all four came on to our property and were going after our horses and alpaca's. Now I take this very seriously because our horses being the breed they are and our alpaca's are worth ALOT of money.

So when I went up to scare them off it didn't work. All four dogs growled and stood their ground. Eventually Tommy got on the ATV and scared them off. So the second visit to the neighbors was underway. I explained nicely that our horses and alpaca's are worth alot of money. And we can't have them being chased or hurt. Of course the neighbors said the dogs were just playing . So I just asked them to please keep their dogs under control.

Well that never happened the dogs continued to come on our property and terrorize our livestock. Finally called the police and animal control. But sense the dogs are well taken care of and hadent actually attacked our animals there was much to dog. Other than to give them a warning and remind them of the leash law.

Some time passed and the dogs hadent been on our property. Until 3 months ago. I was outside with our dogs who all know to stay right with me. Twix was only about 3 months old typical little puppy. Well out of nowhere one of the labs comes charging over to us. Before I could react he had Twix (who had happily bounded up to him) by the neck and was shaking him. And he wouldn't let loose! So I gave him three sharp hard kicks to the side. FINALLY he yelped and let Twix loose. Twix had four puncture wounds to his neck so I ran him to the vet and called animal control while I was at it. Luckily the bite wounds weren't too bad and he won't have scars. But I do beleive if given the chance the lab would have killed him.

Animal control fined the neighbors for not abiding by the restrictions given to them before. And if the lab who attacked Twix ever comes over here and attacks him again it will be his late strike. Well its been three months and I beleive they gave the lab who attacked Twix away. They have also put up a invisible fence around the property. Their dogs still crazy when they see our horses, dogs, or ourselves outside. Barking aggressively with hackles raised. We really cannot leave our home with out a screaming chorus of angry dogs.

The neighbors have also spread rumors about us. Saying we made all this up and their dogs never came on our property EVER. They also say the reason they got rid of their aggressive lab is because we would do ANYTHING to have him put down. Including lie .

We don't talk to them or about them at all. We just keep to our property and don't even look their way. But I wouldn't be truthful if I said they didn't drive me crazy sometimes.

Okay well that was my little rant.

I know how that goes! Living out in a rural community, we don't have leash laws. Everybody does pretty well with keeping their dogs contained to their property, but it is a pain in the butt that when you want to walk your dogs (all three of mine have dog issues) you have to be on the constant look out for any loose dogs that happen to be aggressive. And when people have the gall to say things to me that make it seem like it is my fault their off leash freindly dog came up to my dog aggressive leashed ones and got attacked, that just makes me very upset.

On the other hand, Blackie and Rose have done their share of trouble making, but all of the dogs they've gotten into squabbles with have been dogs that have come onto our property. And when we did have someone complain to us (Blackie and Rose were innocent, just at the wrong place at the wrong time -our neighbor's Malamute was the instigator) we took care to make sure it never happened again.

The least people can do if their dogs are causing problems is to take is seriously and correct the situation, not be babies about it and name call.

I'd like to see your neighbor's response to how your Twix got those puncture wounds in his neck if you're just making up stories. Geesh, the gall of some people. At least the remaining dogs have some form of restraint around them now. Too bad the neighbors didn't learn that lesson before.

I don't have a problem with dogs outside unattended, as long as they stay in their own yard. The leash laws around here even state that this is OK as long as the dog is on the owners' property. It's the rare case, though, when they're not tempted to run off by something.

Im the same way I wouldn't mind so much if they had stayed in their own yard. Like I said before all my dogs can be loose outside though im always with them. They have never left our property though.

Can't believe your neighbours would says such things! And all they had to do to prevent that was not to allow there dogs to run free!

Oh well, people seem to have a compulsive need to blame others for there problems. Just can't take the responsibility themselves.

My neighbours dog is allowed to roam free, but for the most part he does stay in there yard and only comes over every now and then to check out what I figure he considers his surrondings. He is not mean at all and I have never had a problem with him and my dogs, other then I think it is unsafe for them to allow him to run free.

There little dog however at the odd time they allow him to run free and then he comes and terrorizes my guys though the fence if they are out. So I always have to call my dogs in because he won't let up Annoying, but not hurting us any I suppose.

Glad I don't have neighbours on the other side of me

OMG! I cannot believe your neighbors would do that.

The last ranch I lived on we had dogs wonder over sometimes but were never aggressive. We did have a neighbor with APBT that I did not trust. Everytime we were near the fence they would snarl, growl and bark. BUT that neighbor took responsibility for those dogs and put up a great fence. There were ranches near us that killed dogs for behavior you are talking about. Other neighbors dogs harassing the livestock is common grounds for the rancher to shoot the other person's dog while the dogs are chasing the livestock. Good luck this sounds like a no-win situation.

I know it seems harsh, but if I were you, I'd carry some type of spray. I had bear spray I used to carry with me when I went out on the levies with my dogs. We would encounter some dogs but never had to use it. It was bear spray designed for Grizzly bears. Now one thing you should know...when I was in a remote camp in Alaska, 2 dogs, an Akita and a lab got into a fight over a fish. The owner of the Akita emptied a can of grizzly spray on the Akita and it did not phase him. He really did some damage to the lab but they had to wait until they could pull the dogs apart to get the lab out of the Akita's mouth Be careful!

I know it's expensive but can you put more electric fencing around your paddocks or pastures? You can shock the neighbors dogs to keep them out. I've also heard of people putting chicken wire up and making it a hot fence for a while...until the dogs stop messing with it.

You are so right dogs4life it is a no win situation. We are actually considering putting up some electric fencing for our paddocks after christmas. I think I will look into the bear spray as well just in case.

We do live in a rural area with alot of nice farm houses. And I do notice alot of free roaming dogs. Everyone I have encountered has either been friendly or skittish (ran right when it saw me). Well all aside from the neighbors dogs. But I do think the spray is a good idea just in case an aggressive dog finds its way on to our property.

How's the saga of the "neighbor dogs" going?
