Stray/drop off

Well this morning when I went out to feed the horses I had a surprise. As I was coming close to the barn I saw a large brownish grey lump. As I got closer I realized it was a dog a practically starved to death dog . She was just laying in the snow with her eyes closed. So I ran back to the house and grabbed some food to tempt her to her feet and closed my dogs inside.

She tried to stir and thats when I realized not only was she skin and bones she was bleeding, had road rash on her side, and had a broken leg. I called Tommy and told him what had happened and that I was going to be late to the shop. I then ran in the house got a blanket and sock. She was so weak I didn't feel threatened but I still tied the sock tight around her mouth like a muzzle. I then bundled her up in the blanket and carried her to my truck. She looks like a German Shepherd/Malamute or Husky mix and she was light as a feather .

So I drove her to the E-vet which seemed like it took forever. Here is the list of this dogs problems.

Shattered right front leg (it will have to be removed)
Road rash on her right side of her body
Stitches in her left ear which was ripped down the middle
Anouther set on the right side of her face
Surprisingly no worms or parvo. All signs point to starvation.
A large scar aross her back looks like from a whip .

The vet said his best guess on her history. Neglected and beaten she was either thrown from a moving car. Our road is very busy. Or she got away and was hit by a car. I just got home and off the phone with Tommy. We are not going to take her to the pound or shelter. We also are not going to keep her. We will however bring her home and get her back on her feet. We will then find her a great home with people who can handle her needs.

ah stress its great lol

Poor dog, good thing she found you. So the dog survived starvation and being hit by a car, that is amazing. Does the dog have a microchip or tatoo? I'm sure you looked, but just incase it slipped your mind, I thought I'd ask.

I know it's stressful but I would suggest trying to find the original owners before you try re-homing her, it could be their Christmas miracle. Someone out there may be missing her dearly. If you cannot keep her then you might want to try finding someone who can foster her, maybe one of the techs from the e-vet can do it. I know you have lots of animals and a strange dog with medical issues might be more than what you want to take on, especially with the holidays and your new puppy.

I lost a dog 4 years ago and wished she was curled up in someones barn... When I lost her, I called all area vet hospitals, all area animal controls (3 counties since I was on the border of them all), all area shelters, all my neighbors....one of my neighbors actually found her and let me know. As she was hit and did not survive.

Chances are that dog has been missing for weeks if it was not neglected, and the owners might have lost hope of ever finding her. I'd also suggest calling the newspapers to see if there were ads last week or the week before for a lost dog as the owner would have stopped the ad by now.

I know it's a lot of work, but just in case there is a loving family who is missing her, they would be overjoyed to be reunited.

Keep us posted.

Doesn't sound as though she would have lasted another day. I'm so happy you took her in, and just maybe she has a loving family somewhere. I would place an ad in the paper and call the animal shelters. Good luck.

Oh my goodness! That poor sweet thing. How can people be so heartless? I'll never understand that.
Thankyou so much for taking her in, she's lucky you found her. I'm sure she will reward her new adopted 'parents' (when she eventually gets them) with lots of love and devotion.

Cass.

Oh my gosh, what a shocking case of neglect! Poor, poor dog. She's so lucky that you came across her though, as I'm sure her chances of surviving if left alone would be very slim. I hope you are able to find a fantastic home for her, cause she definitely deserves one after all she's been through.

Well here is an update she is going into surgery tomarow to remove her leg . She is eating and drinking but is terrified of just about everyone. If you approach her kennel she starts shaking violently the poor girl. I have also decided I will put an ad in the paper. BUT only after she is completely healed. Anyone can act loving and then take her home and not care for her injuries right. So I am going to wait until she is in better condition before I hand her off. Until then I will contact the local pounds and shelters. Just in case someone is looking for her.

She came through the surgery fine. I went early so I could see her before hand. Her spirit is just so broken . Breaks my heart to watch her shake in fear. Though in these few days I have made some progress. I never look at her and just sit on the ground near her kennel and speak softly. Today before her surgery she actually scooted out of the corner. It will take time I can tell.

She came through the surgery fine groggy but fine. Time will only tell how well she will cope with her new handicap. We also plan to see how she does with three legs. If it is a problem we may look into prosthetic options. Luckily we have the money to keep all her options open. The vet said she blessed to find us since we can afford to do all this for her.

We have decided to call her Angel until either we find her old owners or until she is rehomed . Its going to be a long hard road for her but im not going to give up on her.

I wouldn't put an ad in the paper to find a new home for her. I'd contact a rescue instead. Rescues are set up to deal with this kind of situation and if you're willing to pay the vet bills they'll be more than happy (or should be) to find a foster carer with the experience to deal with her behaviour problems.
This is not something to leave to just anyone (although I know you're aware of that ).

Why are you looking for her former owners since she is obviously abused and abandoned? Do you think she may have been stolen from them?

Cass.

I am not taking her to a shelter and I am not putting an ad in the paper. We have taken in strays many times. We simply get them on their feet and by word of mouth with friends find the perfect suited home for this or that dogs needs. Also every place around here is a kill shelter (holds atleast 2 weeks and then the dog is put down). We are not putting up found dog ads but "Do You Know This Dog" ads. I do not expect to find her owners especially if they were abusive and neglectful I doubt they would want a broken dog.

I have contacted all the local shelters and no one has called in about her. The reason I am giving the owners a chance...Because they could very well have lost her. She could have once been cared for and she got loose and lost and could not take care of herself. Other people along with way could have injured her.

In my heart I know that if they don't love her they will not contact me. If they truly care they will. This is not the first time I have dealt with a situation like this.

I didn't say 'shelter'. A rescue is a network of foster carers. Totally different thing to a shelter. Rescues are extremely good at dealing with dogs in situations like this and often have foster carers who are quite good at dealing with behavioural problems. They do not just put them in a kennel and then euth them when their time runs out.

I must have misunderstood about the ad in the newspaper, but you did say this in a previous post...

You should not try to contact owners. What if the bad owners see the add and then say I want my dog back and go back to abusing her? I'm glad you saved her though. And I agree with cass with finding a rescue. They are great at finding good homes for dogs and rehibilitating them.
