Tasmo's chop day
Tasmo is getting neutered today
!! I found out he has patellar luxation and it's not mild. Also, he's gotten to be overprotective of everone in the family (don't even ask about that one, it's what made me get him neutered immediately).... Not to mention his marking problem. So, there's no reason to keep him intact.Bleh, the big move day is Saturday. I can't wait but there's still SOOO much to do. |

Moving. Yuck. We've got a Boston in quarantine right now that bit his owner's face, pretty severely. The owners were given my brochure, but they haven't called me.
The dog sleeps with them and was startled while sleeping. I thought of Tasmo and his "issues". I hope if he is sleeping with you, that you have a "no dogs above the head" rule. Kit |

He sleeps in a kennel. He has no issues with me directly, he KNOWS I'm top dog. That sounds pretty scary, the dog biting the owner's face. Tasmo is so obedient with me though, so what happened yesterday shook me up really bad.
What happened yesterday was that he bit at a kid. The kid has come over to my apartment a lot, and is very good with animals. In fact, he has a Boston too. Luckily, Tasmo didn't break the skin and I gave him a good few pops on the rump when he did it. Ever since he hasn't even looked me in the eyes, stoops really low, and hasn't even barked. He doesn't take pops very well. I took him to the vet's first thing this morning and talked to him about Tasmo. He said there's no reason to put him to sleep right now, I just have to get extremely tough with him and his protectiveness, and have him neutered. I was planning on having him neutered by my vet in B'ham, but this happened and I didn't want to wait any longer. This dog has stressed me out completely!!! So, back to packing I go. |

Have you been implimenting NILIF? Maybe that kid could come over and ask the dog to sit, give a treat, ask him to come, give a treat, throw the ball, if Taz retrieves....and give a treat...(that is, if you're not too worried about a repeat of the biting.) You could stand right there along side, holding the leash. That might make the dog see the kid as a little more important and a little more in control of Taz's wants as well.

Good Luck with the move. I hope Taz adjusts well to the new place.
I am just wondering if some of the aggression that Taz is showing right now is because of the move. It may not be but with all the stress and commotion of moving maybe he is stessed out as well. Hopefully once you get moved and settled in he may calm down as well. I may not be right on this but it may be something to think about. Keep us posted. |

Good luck with the move. I don't think stress like that would cause aggression. A dog should be able to handle a little stress. But I would try to socialize him more without frightening him and just give him the idea that kids and other friends can be great fun and a source of some extra special goodies if he does what he's asked. Then he'll maybe start to be more at ease with them. But do be watchful just in case he has a problem again. He might.
Let us know how your move goes and don't be gone from G.P. too long. Beat of wishes! |

Stress could lower Tasmo's threshhold of tolerance to things he is uncomfortable with. For example, if he is uncomfortable with kids, loud noises, and people near his food bowl, he might be okay if each one of these things happen individually. But when another stressor is added, the stress piles up and his tolerance level goes down. He might growl if two of the triggers are present, or he might snap if more are present. If all of his triggers occur at once, he loses it. Jean Donaldson describes this very well in "Culture Clash".
I don't mean to imply that Tasmo has those particular issues. I just give them as an example. Kit |

Good luck with the neutering! I'm sure he'll pull through like a little trooper. Be aware that he'll probably still mark after his neuter, but there are nifty things like belly bands to help him understand that it's a bad thin to do!
And I agree with flyn - his tolerance threshhold may very well indeed be lowered by the stress of moving. |

Tasmo has made it through the move with no other incidents. Well, we could have had another bite on our hands, but I stopped the problem before it even happened. We got to Birmingham and started unloading the truck and my mother-in-law came over to help. She failed to mention that she'd invited my sister-in-law to bring her daughters (wild, uncontrollable, almost horrible children) over for her to babysit while UNLOADING THE TRUCK ON MOVING DAY!!!! By the time she happened to mention it to me it was too late. SHE DIDN'T EVEN ASK ME IF IT WAS OKAY!!!! They were on their way by the time I heard of it. Tasmo knew everyone who was there already so he didn't have a problem with them, except for leaking with excitement. However, he does not know my nieces. I kenneled him as soon as they got there but potty-time was a disaster. (He was barking and seemed to be trying to kill them through the kennel already.) I told them not to get ANYWHERE near him but they just came up to me asking why. He lunged at them, and I stopped him halfway. They still didn't get it and I had to actually yell at them to get them back inside the apartment. NOBODY was watching them, and I had told everyone about Tasmo's problem and that the girls should stay away from him. I had also told them when I was taking him to potty. Ugh, sometimes I wonder what planet my in-laws are REALLY from...
Tasmo has been really good, he's just really nervous in the new apartment (and me too, since it's new). Any noise sets off a barking session. Bitty doesn't seem to even notice she's in a different place. She's happy-go-lucky all the time.... |
