What is the best type of training for a police dog.

Do you mean a dog that will be used as a member of a police force? Or do you mean a German Shepard Dog in general?

I think K9 units do a bit of custom training, and generally go for dogs that aren't only focused on the sleeve (like Schutzhund). After all, criminals don't offer their arms to the dogs that are pursuing them!

Some of the dogs that are bred strictly for sport are almost too ball driven to be a good K9. Also something I have heard quoted around certain circles--ScH vs Personal Protection--not only is the "bad guy"not going to have a sleeve on, he's not going to take time to set up blinds and other obstacles for the sport dog. Hope this helps you. Minta

if we were seriously discussing this, i dont think there is much doubt it would be KNPV - after all, its actually a police dog test schutzhund is truly "just a sport" and while MR, FR, PSA, etc make it more realistic, i am not sure they compare at this point to KNPV.

rlott have you ever been to www. leerburg.com? If you go there and click on the discussion forum on the menu it will take you to some pretty interesting discussions about working dogs and maybe you can get your questions answered there. You do not have to be a member to read the forums. Minta
