Giant Schnauzers

Update: Well, things aren't looking good. I looked at the 2 remaining pups today. The small female still hasn't straightened out her neck. And when you look at her gums, they are white. Plus, when you pull slightly on the scruff, it stays in a peak. Dehydrated. The remaining male is fat and healthy. I don't think the little girl will make it 2 more weeks. I looked at the food and water available to mom....and let's just say it's not adequate. Debris in the water bowl...and not much water. And the food? Don't go there. I didn't have the heart to tell the boy that I didn't think the female would make it. All I could say was she is dehydrated and white gums "aren't good". I had to leave after that cause I wanted to cry!! I think the neck issue will be a lifelong problem...IF she survives. This is soooo sad.

Two weeks? From what your describing she won't last but a few days.

I know Crossfire....I guess I'm just fooling myself. It's funny, with my Giant pups, they have their tails docked. I always suture the tails, just my thing. But these pups had their's docked, and well, no sutures, ....nothing but big ugly scabs. :shiver: I don't know why I keep going over there and subjecting myself to this. I told the boy I would be back on Monday, but I don't know if I can bare it.

I just wish I lived closer to try and help.
How far of a drive is it from you to me? Wonder if they would be willing to give me the pup and us meet half way? I know, grasping at straws here....just hate the idea of her dieing because of their lack of concern or whatever you want to call it.I really hope there won't be another litter in the future. |

A good worming might help too. If they are kept outside I am sure they have them and they can sap the strength of a healthy pup rather quickly. And the little girl doesn't sound like she has any time to wait for help.
She needs a vet. |

Crossfire....I am on the far west side of IL.....It takes me 5 hours to get to Indianapolis. Where are you? I don't think she's gonna make the weekend. I have Search and Rescue training on Sunday, and tomorrow is booked as well. I don't think they are going to breed again, yet mom is housed in the same pen as an un-neutered rednose: but they can't afford to spay her (they were told she wouldn't survive anyway<mom) and they can't afford to take the pup to the vet.
This whole situation is a mess. |

I doubt she'll make the weekend as well and your right BJ...she needs a vet, should have had one waaaay before now.Another sad thing is that the old female will go into season yet again and eventually no only will they lose pups but her as well. She's too old to keep putting through this. ![]() |

Bigdoglover have you approached the woman??
I am appauled that a nine year old dog would be having pups anyway. The more You hear about people like this the more my blood just boils. I would be devastated if my actions or lack of action caused pups to die. I find it hard to believe she was a breeder good grief ![]() |

Can you offer to pay for the vet visit? For the pup, I mean. Since the female is promised to you anyway, you could insist.
This is so sad. I think there dogs should be taken away from them. ![]() Cass. |

These folks are, well, different. They take offense to anything. They are poor and feel that everyone is out to get them. If I offered to take the pup now, they would be....upset. This is one of those no-win situations. All I can do is sit back and wait...and keep my fingers crossed. They don't want "charity", and the boy's mother gives me funny looks whenever I stop by. Like I am insulting her...go figure. I'll keep you posted.

Personally I would not take the pup unless you are prepared to take on alot of added responsibility. Even taking the pup I couldn't rehome it cause well to me no one's going to look after them as well as Iam, just my own personal opinion. That would be why I still have one of mine that I didn't have the heart to pts even tho he was born with a rectal prolapse.
I do think if she is that badly dehydrated and more then likely in pain I would ask them to do the kind thing and pts. Or I would put in a call and see what happenes from there, no animal should be forced to suffer. Most puppies do pass away with in the first 4 days, but this one is much older then that no reason for her to be like that.... Sorry some people just make me mad. Wish you the best of luck and I'll keep the lil one in prayers |
