Convicted Child Molester Moves Next Door

As many of you know I work in the field of law enforcement and we are the first to get the most updated lists of those convicted of sexual assault. Today we noticed someone new moving into the house next to my mother's place; my mother's is not only a place where my own children and grandson are usually at but also the children and grandchildren of my brothers and sisters.

Yes, I am nosey when it comes to finding out who it is living next to my family and did my usual "looking into it" and guess what, this new "neighbor" is a convicted child molester, convicted on several counts of molestation as well as rape.

Needless to say I'm NOT a happy camper and although I realize that he has as much right to live where he wants as anyone else I am one of those folks who do NOT believe that sexual predators can be reformed.

I can't even begin to tell you how concerned I am over this, I just had to vent a bit and hopefully since he's renting he won't be here long!

Crossfire, I heard an interesting conversation on the radio about this very topic last week...and a man called in with an almost identical situation.

His solution was to post a sign in his yard, warning people who saw it that a conviced sex offender lived somewhere in the area. He didn't say where, but gave the URL to the database online where anyone can find out.

Hey that isn't a bad idea!

Only one draw back to it, since I work for the PD he could very easily try to say it was harassment, granted it IS public information but it could very easily turn into a looooooong and drawn out internal affairs investigation.

Kind of puts me between a rock and a hard place but you can be sure that I'll be passing the word on to everyone in the ENTIRE addition.

Maybe I can talk some of the neighbors into putting signs up? Hmmmm yes I like this!

Yeah, that would work well.

If you don't mind getting Orwellian, you can purchase radio tags and place them on your kids/grandkids...

Very true! The biggest thing that concerns me is that since moving in this guy has already gone out of his way on more than one occasion to talk to my daughters, even gone as far as stopping them as they were leaving the house as if he had something important to say and then talking about nothing.

How aware his he that you are a law enforcement officer? Are you in your right to speak to him about his conduct as an official?

I don't know the laws in every state, but I was under the impression that sex offenders were suppose to post a sign in their yard stating they had been convicted of a sexual violation. I know some of the rules are not completely enforced but I think they are suppose to here.

Since he just moved in recently I highly doubt that he is aware yet; I don't remember stopping in to visit with my mother or check on the grandbaby while working since he has been there.

I'll be making my visits more often now while on duty and parking my squad DIRECTLY in front of his door. My children thank goodness are old enough to handle themselves and stay away from this guy but its our younger ones I worry about, I told my mother not to hesitate in letting him know he isn't welcome if he decides to come over to chat about nothing with the kids again and I do plan on having a few words with him myself if he does it while I'm around.

I'm afraid I can't just go out of my way to speak to him in an "official" capacity without due cause, especially since it directly relates to my own family ( conflict of interest ) but won't hesitate to make a case on it if he presses his luck.

Unfortunatly that isn't the case in Indiana, even those classified as habitual offenders do not have to post anything or make their presence known to anyone other than via the Indiana registry.

Im pretty sure they only have to register. Its different how they have to register in every state. But You MUST register. States do have slight variations on this, so I gues the yard sign is a possibility, but That seems like a law suit over invasion of privacy waiting to happen...

I know my town has as least three. Land lords here refuse to rent to them even though that too I think is technically illegal, but they all live in a hotel.

These are the top two worst crimes, in my opinion. I also don't believe they can be reformed, and I don't believe they have the right to live where ever they want. Concern should be for the children in the area first, before anyone even thinks about what that monster wants. He lost his right to choose when he molested and raped for the first time.
I can tolorate a lot of things but this is not one of them. I'd be just as upset as you, Sonja. Lets hope he really doesn't stay long.
