Neighbor's Dog

Today, I was out on the back deck talking with my mother, when we heard a thunk and a dog screaming. Neighbor's dog had been hit by a car. The neighbor came out and was yelling at the guy that had hit the dog, which scared the guy - he got back in his car and left.

I saw the guy take the dog off the road, and put it on the front porch. He sat there, crying. We told him if there was something we could do, to let us know, but he wouldn't answer. He's always been a very odd, eccentric person, that I have always steered clear of. Soon after, animal control came and picked up the dog. I imagine he either couldn't or wouldn't pay the vet bills, and the dog was probably put to sleep.

I think the dog is an australian shepherd mix. That dog has been loose more times than I'll ever be able to count, even though the man has a perfectly good, 6 foot wooden fence around his entire huge yard.. he just simply would leave the gate open. Or if he was out there, the dog would be loose, and he'd assume the dog wouldn't go in the street. When he walked the dog, I never saw him use a leash.

I feel so sad for that dog. Thanks to an irresponsible owner, the dog paid the price.

Poor dog. I bet he won't learn from that experience either. He probably blamed the driver for the entire unfortunate event. *sigh*

That's horrible. It's sad to see what happens to to a dog with an irresponsible owner.

That is so sick! I see lots of people walking their dogs near roads without leashes and the majority of them don't even have basic obedience, and most of the renmainder cannot be recalled.

We also see endless notices posted up on forums and around neighbourhoods announcing lost dogs. Most of them didin;t have collars and tags simply because many owners either feel that collaring the dog would 'spoil' the beautiful fur!!! or just assumed that their dogs love them so much that they would always run back to the owners when called! GFRRRRRR!!!!!

That is so sad!! Poor dog! That makes me feel just awful. Irresponsible owners make my blood boil. One of my neighbors lets her dog roam the neighborhood. I have had to shoo her out of my yard more than once (our fence is going up next week...thank God... and she isn't exactly a nice dog). I can't believe the guy that hit the dog just drove off...scared or not, I never could have just left. Are there laws against that?

I don't know if there are laws on that here in Nevada or not. This neighbor acted like he was gonna beat the daylights out of the driver.. so I think I can understand him leaving. He was an older man who looked very upset, but I imagine he didn't want to be beat senseless, either. He tried to talk to the neighbor, but the neighbor was NOT going to listen. And knowing how this neighbor of mine acts, I wouldn't have been surprised to see him swing a fist at the driver.

That is really sad! The poor dog took the fall for the owners stupidity! I feel really bad for the dog and the poor guy who hit him. To have to live with that and know that when you tried to do the right thing and stop the owner tries to attack you. How very very sad.

It irritates the daylights out of me to see people walk the dogs next to a road without a leash on. In my sister's apt complex there are people who actually just let their golden retriever out the door in the morning and let it run around and do its business and come back....this is a busy apartment complex without a lot of open space for him to run. You can take a well behaved dog and it can see a bird, squirrel and just go....people don't think like that....
Poor puppy and I hope this guy doesn't get another one. From the sounds of it I don't blame the driver for leaving. He stopped got out of his car and tried....it isn't his fault that the dog ran out in front of him....

That is just too sad. Like everyone said, at least the driver tried. I probably would have done the same thing if the owner seemed threatening to me. It's so hard to be the "good samaritan" these days. It's really too bad.
