Yeah it is frustrating.... I've had a couple of those moments when Bitty has slipped by me out the door, and more than a few times when Lazy was living with me and her big self knocked me out the door.... But it's not really good to yell at them when you catch them again, it just frightens them because they can't comprehend why it's bad to run off. It also makes them fear coming back to you when you finally find them, which in turn, if they get loose again, they may try their best not to get caught. I always praised Lazy A LOT for coming to me even after she escaped (and even though I was raging mad and scared to death) and she had gotten to be really good at coming back when told to. Even when I had to run her down and tackle her I still praised her and treated her like I hadn't seen her in ten years. She got to where she loved coming back to me just for that.

Yes Cheyenne got a spanking to....she made me very mad....and she has been trained to sit, stay, lie down, and come to me when called. But she was being a real butt-hole today, and made mommy very angry. Erin was just as mad as I was.

Well spanking and yelling at a dog certainly will make the dog want to run back to you.
![]() Ripley is the same way and believe me I WANT to spank him sometimes. He completely will tune me out the moment he gets some freedom. I'm glad you found her.. |

I know that feeling all to well. Kayda has done this a couple times. She slips out the door with me....she knows how to sit and stay and come when called very well....
To her it is all a game....she will get to the top stair and look down and then look at me.....mean while I am telling her "Don't you dare...." and then she is off. This first time she did this a chased her and then stopped and said fine...stay out here and took of running towards my apartment....sure enough she followed.... |

I know the feeling well! Sometimes they can be such TURKEY BUTTS! LOL I am not one to spank but I have been known to feel like a fool trying to catch Sunny while she thinks it is sooooo much fun to play this game. LOL Thankfully it hasn't happened in quite a while.

I know it's frustrating, but the best thing is to say nothing, don't spank it shout at it or anything. Just put it back on the leash and go home.
A dogs brain works by association, .... Sit = treat.... Lay = treat etc etc . What it remembers is the last thing that happened. So in this case it remembers.... Running about = lots of fun ... Owner catching me = telling off. If your not careful next time it will just run further and further away. |
