Window shields are ordered!
I had my trusted contractor come out and give me an estimate on some window protection for hurricane storms. He said I can use it for any violent storm such as severe thunder storms and also tornados! This stuff is virtually indestructable. It's made of vinyl coated kevlar and goes up on bolts three inches apart that are imbedded in the building walls with wing nuts and lock washers as fasteners. It's light weight and easy for me to put up by myself. It rolls up like a building plan or map and is stored anywhere there is a flat surface (like under a bed). He gave me two estimates. One was for the 13" metal bracing they put on tracks with the clear pannels every sixth pannel which would give me a strip of 13" of light. The Kevlar defuses the light but lets it in each window. There was so little difference between the cost of the easily stored Kevlar and the bulky and hard to store metal sheets so I opted to get the fabric shields. They are Miami-Dade rated and approved by FEMA so they are the best they can be.
I can't seem to find a picture of them but they are like having a shade on the outside of the window. Some light gets in but not all of it. It'll be enough for mom to walk around safely in the house. He also told me that we can sleep safely in our home during the worst of the hurricane! His house had these shields back in 2004 when Hurricane Jean came through and he had no damage at all...
He also told me what to do with my garage door to make it secure during a storm. This guy is a gem! Too bad he's married and about 20 years too young!
