Wink Mya's Bill Lost or Stolen Pets

Hi all,

I wanted to take this information to all folks that have or had pets. There is a new bill that is going to be taken up called MYA's Bill. This bill will make it possible for all Lost pets to have a chance to have a voice and be found. As it is most or all folks are sold a bill of goods that pets need an ID chip at a cost!!! Well this is all fine and good but, nobody checks them!!!! This bill will mandate that all vets for any visit will have to check for a chip with out any permission form the owner. This will allow our pets to have a voice just like if you went to the doctor and told them your name. This will allow us all to have our pets back if they are stolen or lost Please make an effort to go to the link below and Support this bill and write your congressman. We have got to make this diffrence for all them that we love....
Why is it so easy to give out your credit card.... And our pets do not have a voice?

Not sure I like this. Gracie was adopted from the shelter with a chip from her previous owner. Does this mean when I take her to the vet she will be taken away from me and given to her previous owner. Same thing with Lucy she has a chip for her previous owner. It's a good law though I guess.

I think the bill needs to be amended to say "inital vist" but it is something we need. Right now there are no recomeneded guidelines for vets except to sell and implant chips. I had to remail hundreds of fliers when an office called me and told me that they needed the actual chip number in order to prove to people why they needed to scan any new dog that met my dog's desciription. I shouldn't have to do that my dog is listed as missing with AKCs CAR program and AVID pettrac. Another vet said he wouldn't scan my dog without the owner's permission even if he thought it was my dog! My dog has been stolen so there is no way the theif would give permission to scan my dog!
When a pet is lost or stolen the owner should immedately call all pet recovery services the animal is listed with. The pet is then put on a missing (or hot) list. Therefore, if a vet scans your dog and checks and it isn't listed as lost or stolen then all he or she should do is inform you that the chip isn't registered in your name and update your pets record with the chip number. It is VERY important that you get that chip updated. What if you dog got away and ended up in a shelter or vet and was scanned....then they would be contacting the owner that surrendered your dog to the pound! How terrible!
All you need is the info from the shelter showing the owner of record that is listed with the recovery service surrendered the dog to the shelter....it is that simple.

As long as you have proof where you go her, I don't see the problem. I think those chips should be removed before letting anyone adopt if the owner cannot or will not give the paper work over to the shelter to give to the next owner.

I have been involved with rescue for about 10 years now. This year I took in a dog and the owner refused to turn over the microchip info. I didn't know what to do so I called the microchip company. I found out that the person who turned in the dog was indeed the owner of record. They (the pet recovery service) asked me to send them a copy of the release form. Any shelter or reputable rescue requires that people sign a release form when they turn a dog over. This is how I was able to get the chip changed into my name.
Dr Windley says while he can see the chip on an x-ray they are virtally impossible to remove. He also says he will not perform such surgery unless the chip has migrated and he is concerned it could harm the animal. So far (he has seen chips that migrate usally the result from inproper implantaiton) he has not had such a case.

Gracie was not turned in, she was found as a "stray" and her owners would never respond to phone calls. Lucy's chip though now that I think about it wasn't ever activated by the previous owners. I have everything to activate it and I should do that soon.

Wonder if the shelter could help you with that? I'd find out what pet recovery service her chip is listed with and call them up and ask them. There should be something you could do. Gee what if she went missing.....seriously I never dreamed I'd ever need to use that pet recovery service. Mya was chipped because of the AKC rules etc. You always think that it can never happen to me because I am a good pet owner....I thought that. Look what happened. Mya has been gone 13 months now. That chip is my only hope.

I try to keep their tags on 24/7 and they will all have chips soon. Right now 2 have chips one activated with someone elses information and the other is a blank slate and I think I have the paperwork that I can just mail in.
