Dogs doing "extraordinary" things
I think we all know how special dogs are, and how they can perform "miracles" as such. Has there been an instance where your dog has done something "extraordinary"? Even events where they've done something that had a positive result would be interesting to read about.
Harley's story When I was 9 years old I was with my sister walking Harley, and I got attacked by a street dog. This dog leapt up on me and was about to bite my face, when Harley intervened (sensing my panic, I assume) and bit the dog on his leg really hard. The stray jumped off me and I had a few seconds to start running towards my home, where this dog proceeded to wait outside our front door for 4 straight hours. I seriously think I would have either died or been seriously injured had it not been for Harley. Harley's never bitten a dog in his entire life, except for this time. Abby's story We took Abby with us to Melbourne one time, and we were walking around one of the city suburbs. There was a stray dog wandering along the footpath, and it decided to attempt crossing the busy main road (that had 6 lanes). The dog was inches from being hit by a car, and Abby barked at the dog. Having got it's attention, the stray dog ran back onto the footpath. That dog would have been killed if Abby hadn't been her naughty self, barking at dogs all the time! |

We got hugo at 12 weeks old in October. He was 5 months when he saved our new house from catching fire. The boys plugged in the Christmas lights and went up town, they wanted the lights to be on when they got home in the dark. My daughter and I were warn out and Grandma was really not feeling well so we all took a nap. Hugo ushually slept in my room seeing as he was just a pup and not given full run of the house. Grandma had woken up let Hugo out and for some reason closed my door. She then went back to bed and closed her door. Hugo was left in the livingroom. My daughter was asleep upstairs in her room and Hugo was terrified of the stairs. He went up the steps and jumped on her bed. She came down stairs and woke me up wanting to know why the puppy was jumping on her? I smelled a funny smell and Hugo was acting funny still. He took me right to the front door and sat. The smell was really strong there so I looked around and went out on the porch to find an electrical socket smoldering! When I came in I checked the socket inside and it was so hot I called the non-emergancy number to the fire dept and asked about fire inside of walls. They came pretty quick to check out the house. The checked the temp of the wall and were amazed, it was hot, our GFI outlet failed, the Heavey duty outdoor cords failed and the breaker didn't trip! If Hugo hadn't woke my daughter up the house would have caught fire with her upstairs! Not to mention it was right before Christmas and we would be homeless and our Christmas ruined. The firemen really loved all over our big puppy and Said he was a Keeper for sure! I knew then Hugo was a very special boy!!!

Zoe's Mama

Wow, what great stories! That one about Hugo reminds me of my Christmas when I was 8 years old. We didn't have dogs then but we had our 2 (now deceased) cats Tiger and Snow and a cockatiel named Peppy. We had a fire in our basement the October of that year. With all the repairs to the house, it took so long to fix, we didn't come home until Christmas Eve! It was definitely a hectic time. But no one was hurt. I had Snow nearby me, so I grabbed her as we left the house, my older brother grabbed Peppy so the only one missing was Tiger. My mother wouldn't let any of us go in to get her obviously so she was stuck upstairs in my parents bedroom. Luckily our neighbour was around. Such an awesome guy, he ran in to get Tiger himself.
I don't think Zoe's done anything extraordinary. Nothing that really sticks out in my mind. But she's my baby girl. She doesn't need to do anything to impress me ![]() |

Nothing quite so dramatic here, but Blackie thought it was a bad situation.
We had just moved in to the house we live in now and had just gotten Blackie. An insurance adjuster came out to our house and my mom told him to do whatever he needed and if he needed anything she would be outside in the backyard. Long story short, Mom was out in the backyard hanging up towels on the clothsline to dry and Blackie was lounging around near her. The insurance adjuster walked around back and Blackie immeadiatly went into protect mode. He saw an unknown person on his property walking right towards mom and took action. He growled (this is an under a year Lab pup!) and ran right at the guy. The guy stopped dead and Mom said, "Blackie, its okay!" and Blackie stopped, looked at the guy, and then went over for petting. While Mom wasn't in any danger, Blackie didn't know that and we've all felt safe ever since then knowing that he will protect us if needed. I can't remember Rose doing anything "special" in that way, but that's fine by me. She's my girl. She's done many "heroic" things considering her temperment (down/staying even when a dog fight broke out right by her), but nothing that had an impact on us, so to speak. Chloe....LOL Not much to say about her yet in terms of heroics. She did help me find Pheobe the other day. My brother had a bunch of friends over for a bonfire and the poor kitty was terrified. She pooped all over our bathroom and then ran and hid somewhere. We wanted to get her into my mom's room for safekeeping, but we couldn't find her and were really getting worried. We had looked behind things, under things, everywhere. (What if she had gotten outside?) I let Chloe loose downstairs and told her to "Find the kitty." She went running around the living room for a minute, then sniffed at the base of our couch, then came running back to me. "Find the kitty, Chloe." Same thing. I told her good girl, gave her a treat, and kenneled her back up and then lifted up the reclining portion of our couch. Out flew a kitty, scared out of her mind. We were able to get Pheobe upstairs and out of harms way, all thanks to Chloe. Nothing much, but she has potential. ![]() |
