Feeling better, but had a BIG scare...

I am feeling a lot better about Brad's death. I think it was easier because he was older, and had cancer..and was having trouble breathing. We new the kindest option for him was to have him euthanized so it wouldn't have gotten even worse! I still miss my boy, I spent 10 years with him! He was such a sweet little man. And he had his share of troublesome moments. I had quite the scare yesterday, and I thought I was going to lose 3 dogs in 2 months (2 dogs in the SAME week!!).

Yesterday Peanut started acting disoriented. He was walking in circles, and he was drooling excessively (it was just falling from his mouth). He didn't know where he was going, he wouldn't lay down. We rushed him to the vet. They were not much help, didn't have a clue what was going on. They gave him an injection of antibiotics, fluids, and some Clavamox and said if hes not better in 2 days take him to the emergency vet (This was not my normal vet, they just happened to be the only vet open on Fourth of July). After Peanut got home, he finally fell asleep and was a calm. After about 5 hours of sleeping, I decided to take him out of the crate, and I got the scare of my life. He was stiff, and I thought he was dead. I started crying and picked him up and he was just hanging there in my arms. I brought him to my mom's bed, and as soon as I laid him down he got up, and was acting completely normal (Normal Peanut). We brought him to our vet today who within a few minutes determined he had several rotten teeth, and they were causing an infection and the infection was causing him to act disoriented. So Peanut has an appointment to get his teeth cleaned and the rotten teeth pulled out. We have had Peanut 4 years, but both vets he went to the past two days said he was at least 10 years old, most likely older. (Which is consistent when we got him, the vets said he was 7-9 years old). I thought I was going to lose my Peanut too..but luckily he is fine! I am so paranoid though. I have been just sitting on the couch watching every little thing the dogs do to see if they act lethargic, or if their breathing changes.

Harry (12), Daggett, and Elliot (8 in September) are going to be going in for a wellness check, blood work, etc to make sure there is no underlying illness, and Harry will probably be put on some vitamins for old age. He is such a healthy dog, he looks like a 12 year old, but acts like a 3 year old! His teeth are filed down, but very white and tartar free. He hasn't been sick his ENTIRE life. The only thing that was wrong with him was his hearth murmor when he was a puppy, that went away when he was 2 years old (most likely due to the Fetching/exercising). And Daggett and Elliot have both been obese most of their lives, and only the past 4-5 months have been at a very healthy weight (Elliot's weight is perfect!! And Daggett still has a few more pounds to lose but is so trim and active now!)

But anyway, just thought I would update, and check in.

Goodness I'm sorry for your loss. I'm so glad too that you figured out what was wrong with Peanut! It's so scary when dogs are sick.

I'm sorry that Brad past away. Blackie and Rose are finally starting to slow down and it stinks. Senior pets are supposed to live forever.

So glad Peanut's behavior was just a scare and nothing more serious.

Oh how frightening! The last thing you need right now is to deal with another death! I'm so glad to hear that Peanut's on the way to a good recovery, though. It's lovely having older dogs, but I could do without the health complications that can come with old age.

Thanks you guys! I don't even have my Brad's ashes back yet .

Peanut is doing wonderful, after he is off antibiotics he will be going in for the teeth cleaning. I am going to be scared and paranoid the entire time with him under Anesthesia. (I job shadowed at a vets office in 8th grade, and a black lab died while getting his teeth cleaned). But I am sure he will do fine.

I'm sure he will do great and he will feel so much better afterwards and so will you knowing that his teeth wont be an issue anymore.
Sorry for your loss. I just lost one of my rats this morning and I'm still in shock over it.

Yikes!

I'm so sorry you lost Brad, and I'm glad you were able to find out what was wrong with Peanut... even if he did give YOU a heart attack!

Wishing Peanut a smooth cleaning and speedy recovery! I bet he'll feel even better after those nasty teeth are out. I know how crummy it is to have a rotten tooth... I felt SO much better when I got rid of it!
