I think he should get whatever dog makes his children happy.

As much as it makes me cringe, I have a cousin who is getting ready to home an Australian Labradoodle. I gave my .02 about designer breeds and suggested he look at the Portuguese Water Dog as an alternative. An IDEAL labradoodle has basically the same specifications as a pure bred Portuguese Water Dog.

But his kids want a doodle and he doesn't want to break their hearts.

So while I understand the reason for the petition, I can't help but feel people are missing the point. He wants to get a dog for his kids. So people pressuring him to a rescue is not really fair. Let him make his own choice without pressure. A dog is a very personal thing and should not be decided by committee.

just my .02

Hmm, interesting.

I'm with B-line on this one, selecting a puppy is very personal. They could have handled this better.

I'm really disappointed the AKC and Best Friends got involved, obviously for publicity or they would have pointed out that promising young children a puppy for loss of family time isn't OK. I'm also disappointed Obama and his family would go along with the Presidental Pup poll.

American Kennel Club - Vote 2008 - Presidential Pup Survey
Quote:
The AKC launched its poll to find a breed for Obama (American Kennel Club - Vote 2008 - Presidential Pup Survey) after reports that - win or lose - the Obamas promised their two daughters a dog after the presidential election. More than 42,000 people cast their vote over the seven week campaign. The Poodle clinched the nomination after the breed battled it out with the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier in a race almost as tight as Clinton and Obama's run for the Democratic nomination for president. The Poodle won by a (dog) hair, with just a few hundred votes separating the top two contenders.
Quote:
"Most of our Presidents kept purebreds in the White House," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "When times get tough - during a bad economy or when presidential pressures are at their peak - these dogs serve as personal companions and give much relaxation and laughter to our leaders during difficult times."
Wow!

That makes me so sad. Mutts can give just as much companionship and love as a purebred. Also you can easily adopt a rescue poodle too.

I know...it is sad.

Maybe we should come up with our own letter to the Obamas and the AKC.
