Has anyone seen "The Red Violin?" It absolutely blew me away. And how about the "Once Upon a Time in China" series?
I've gotta confess that I'm also one of those people who liked "Dust" and "Prospero's Book." And I love a good anime! I guess my guilty pleasure is Jackie Chan; he amazes me, and his sense of humor and fun is contagious. |

Ahhh, Prospero's Book, that was a good one too. I'm a bit of a Peter Greenway fan, also liked The Draftsman's Contract and Pillow Book - although his films can be a bit hard to watch at times.
Another "odd" director that I'm getting rather fond of is Guy Madden - Careful, Saddest Music in the World, Twilight of the Ice Nymphs and Dracula, Pages From a Virgin's Diary. These are great to watch on DVD with the director's voice over - he's a hoot!! |

Prospero's Book was lovely with a nice bottle of cognac. I just stumbled across it, but haven't been able to find any of Greenway's others at any of the video shops here.
Twilight of the Ice Nymphs and Dracula, Pages from a Virgin's Diary sound intriguing. I'll have to check them out on the IMDB. There's another film that never got much notice, "The Mighty." It managed to be touching without being insultingly sappy, and the acting, particularly by the two boys, was a revelation. |

The Guy Madden films may be hard to find. We have seen most of them at a film series run through our art museum. They are VERY quirky - most are shot in black & white and have a 1930's film feel about them, including very scratchy images. Dracula was a film version of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's production of the story, B&W with touches of red added as required;-)
I haven't heard of The Mighty - what's it about?? |
