Any other Portuguese Water Dog owners here?

Hi,

I'm a new member and was just wondering if there were any other Portuguese Water Dog owners on this site.

Don't worry, I'm not insulted if you say, "What the XYZ is a Portuguese Water Dog???" I've heard it all before as the breed is still somewhat unknown.

I have two PWD's, (also called Porties), one of them is 12.5 and her name is Nikita and we also have a 10 month old puppy named Maggie.

Here are some pics of our girls.... Thanks again for the great site.

Welcome aboard!

I don't own any PWD's, but I've come across a couple here and there at my job!

Your babies are beautiful! It's too funny how they can look so different under all that fur when they're wet

Hey B, welcome to Global Paw!

I don't own a PWD either, but they're a great breed. I bet your two have a blast being able to play in your pool!

Welcome aboard, and great looking dogs! Sadly, the only Portie I've met tried to take my face and hands off every time I went near him, but I'd love to meet your two!

Crazy! In all my years of being around PWD's, studying the breed, meeting other owners, etc. I've NEVER heard of an unfriendly PWD. Actually, let me rephrase that, I've never heard of a PWD that wasn't a huge bundle of LOVE towards both it's owners and strangers.

I can't help but think the owner must have either abused the dog or not socialized it properly.

That's really a shame that you had that experience with a PWD..

I can tell you this though, the PWD is an extremely smart breed. If not trained well, they can be VERY mischievous, will test their owners boundaries and will get into trouble, because of all the unfocused intelligence they have.

But again, I've never heard of a "mean" Portie..

Thought I would contribute some more PWD pictures... In case anybody likes to see/know more about the breed:

I'm trying to teach the puppy how to "DIVE" down to the bottom of the pool and retrieve toys. About 6-7 foot dive. I'm on step 1, which is teach puppy to stick her head under water, and retrieve. Hopefully by the end of summer, she'll be full diving.

Maggie, head underwater:

Just cause I'm almost 13 years old, doesn't mean I can't fly too...
Nikita:

After a long day of swimming:

Sensational photos - especially the action shots

That dog was just....screwed up. His name was Max and he was about two years old. He wasn't abused, but he was TERRIFIED of everything. If you got anywhere near him he would freak out and fear bite. The rabies pole was our best friend when he was boarding with us, as he couldn't be coaxed to come out of his kennel or even let us go near him. He probably wasn't socialized properly, but there had to be some rotten genetics backing that up as well.
So he wasn't attacking on the offensive, but on the defensive. The only dogs I've met that actually attacked on the offensive was a Border Collie, a Bulldog, a couple of Dalmations, some Poodles, a Papillon, and a Chow. But the PWD was one of the few dogs that we couldn't get to warm up to us.

Sort of like a Schnauzer in a Poodley-type body.

Aww, your babies are just beautiful!

I agree, I have been lucky enough to meet 6 different Portuguese Water Dogs, and they were all lovers. They didn't have an aggressive bone in their bodies, and we the most goofy acting dogs lol.
