Angry Killing by way of Gas Chambers

I read someting very disturbing in the paper the other day. I wish I would have saved the article cause i would have posted it. In Charlotte, NC, they put all the dogs and cats up for euthanasia into a big gas chamber and gas them to death. The animals fight and kill each other before the gas even starts to take effect. They said that sometimes there are too many animals in one chamber and the gas doesn't work the first time. Then they stop, and start all over, gas them again and again until they all die!! What kind of sick world is this?? Could this even be legal???

Oh my gods! This certainly doesn't sound legal, but then again we're talking about animals here and it's a sad fact that a lot of people out there just don't care.
I really hope, if it's not legal, that it's stopped. Oh hell, even if it IS legal I hope it's stopped. I can't believe this would happen in the first place.

Cass.

Up until about 2 years ago, the animal shelter here in town used the gas chamber, often not all died, and new animals brought in, to be killed with animals that were not quite dead. Things were brought out in the open on how they were treating the animals, and they were made to change.. they now do it by injection. They got rid of the folks working there then, and hired new people.. it's not a bad shelter now, but still a very high kill shelter. They just do it more humanely. I was up there a week ago, to put my name on a pug up there, for PugSavers out of California, but the pug had just been reclaimed by it's owner (here's hoping they watch their dog a bit more closely this time), and I took a walk around. They keep it very comfortable, temp wise, and it's kept clean.. doesn't even smell. I wish they had more things for the dogs to sleep on though. I remember when I saw Bentley there last year, he had nothing. Poor guy.

Personally I find it sickening. I have never seen a shelter that used gas chambers, but my question for any shelter using them would be "why"? It's a slow death, the animal doesn't even get to die with dignity, and many times they suffer.

I'm not sure if this is legal or not, I'd certainly hope it isn't.

Because it's cheaper. At least that was what they were saying in the paper here when people asked WHY they did it that way. No individual euthanization shots, less time spent dealing with the animals. Sigh.

I don't see how anyone who thinks they are working to help and defend animals can think a gas chamber is a good thing, even if it is cheaper for the city or state. Euthanasia by injection is so much more humane. At least the animal gets to die in someone's arms (even though some don't necessarily like people), and not surrounded by many other struggling and fighting animals. That just makes me boil inside to think of them dying in a gas chamber.

I have to think.... What if one of my dogs got loose, most likely Bitty would out of the two, and by some act of who-knows-what, I never find her? And what if she doesn't find a new home if she ends up at the pound (of course by then I would have definitely found her, this is all VERY hypothetical), and she ends up getting put down? I would MUCH rather her die by injection than in a gas chamber. She is the kindest little dog and it just tears me up to think of one like her getting attacked and hurt WHILE they are dying. Ohhh....

Okay I'm off my soapbox now. Just had to vent a bit.

That's as in-humain as the shoots that were in TN. They had a tiny block building with no windows or ventilation. Two sizes of square doors with shoots. You put large dogs in one and small dogs in the other. They slide down the shoots but are all together inside without food or water, inches deep in excrement, to wait till evening when a truck would pick them up and take them to their death if they were still alive. The big dogs would generaly kill the small ones, and mean kids would even put cats, snakes and things down there. Well people from all over the USA wrote to the right people, stood guard so no one would put another animal down there untill this was stopped. It did get world wide attention and was stopped. The same thing could be done at the gas chambers. People need to know this is happening so proper channels can addressed. I'm worried at what kind of people could actually do this in the first place. I would not work in a place like that........I'd be picketing and asking for more donations to help these animals. If lots of people would come together, clean the dogs up, get them evaluated and take them to a PetSmart or even under a big shade tree on week ends, then these poor guys would find loving and safe homes.

I've heard of this, and it absolutely disgusts me. Makes me thinks of the concentration camps in WW2.

It was in the paper here so I imagine evetryone who reads the paper knows about it. It's horrible. I feel the same WingedFoal. I couldnt bare the thought of kai getting lost and being put down like this. If other dogs were to fight him I dont think he would even try to fight back. They would kill him. Heloves everyone. When I think of all the animals who have died like this it really breaks my heart. I don't know what I can do to help but I am going to find something.

A few years back we actually had a county that had their so called "supervisor" for their shelter putting dogs and cats in a 10x10 wood box, he'd hook a hose from the box to his truck muffler and kill them that way.

When he was finally caught he said that he didn't see anything wrong with it and had always been commended by the county for saving them so much money yearly. The county had no clue that THIS was how he was cutting his expenses!

Oh wow. I hope he got in some serious trouble. I think this country's animal cruelty laws should bare harsher punishment. i dont understand how people could be so cruel.
