Congrats congrats congrats!! how exciting!

One thing though, $300?!? That sets off a red flag, I mean, a pet quality Dobe is about $1500, I can't believe there is a $1200 price difference between that two breeds. Maybe I'm wrong, but it caught my attention. Does the breeder show, health test, do her dogs have titles, are they AKC registered, etc etc??

$300 sounds about right. When I was looking a Goldens that was about the price for a pet quality male. I visited and talked to about 15 different breeders. The 3 most expensive ($900 - $1300) were definately a BYBs. None of them did any confirmation showing or any other agility or sport trials, genetic testing and according to them have as many as 15 (ykes!) litters per year. The 3 least expensive ($300 - $450) where excellent breeders. All showed in confirmation and two did agility and/or sporting trials, did extenisve genetic testing. 1 said they have 3 litters a year but their breeding "group" consisted of 10 owners. The other 2 only have 1 litter a year at most but usually only every couple of years. The ones in the middle were a great mix of different levels of breeder and cost. (I don't know about the registration because I was not interested in that because I never intend to show)

On some level price has very little to do with the quality of the dogs. The cheaper ones I talked to breed their dogs becuase they needed/wanted another dog. Selling the other was just a bonus and not their intent.

$300 - $400 is the average price in the paper. I think it seems about right, the breeder is a small time breeder they have all the pups vaccinations done before they go to new homes.

It seems like the perfect pet. They BYB I have asked questiosn too have said I can't see the parents and theiir adds are always in the papers all the NON SHED mixes for sale from 100-250.
I feel I have talked to responsible ppl.

We called last night:
They have 4 apricot toy poodles 2 male and 2 female 7wks.
1 female 14 wks. black toy poodle
1 4 1/2 pound tiny toy poodle

In the add they had price range of $250-$400
They also have some mixes.
Wednesday after religon I am going to go over to the house. look at puppies and maybe even pick one out!! Then i can pick him up after momorial day!! yipeee

Another red flag - there's no such thing as a "tiny toy poodle" and no ethical breeder breeds mixes. I'm sorry to burst your bubble but be very careful with this breeder, they sound like a BYB to me...

Congrats! I know you're excited. Do be careful and patient. Check out this breeder more. Are there health tests done on the dogs? Proof? Showing: Do they show, have titles showing their dogs have good conformation etc? Did you find these pups in the newspaper? Be careful about back yard breeders. They sometimes breed pups with health and conformation problems as well as temperament problems. Breeding for 20 years doesn't make them responsible breeders in and of itself. $300.00 for a purebred dog, pet quality is cheap. I found that the average from a reputable breeder in various breeds is about $600.00- $1200.00. Dobes are more sometimes because of the ear cropping. But when I looked into pet Labs from a reputable breeder quite a number of years ago, they were like $600.00- $800.00. $300.00 sounds like BTB to me.

Anyhow....don't let your thrill of getting a pup rush you into anything. Take your time and do the research. It will pay off in the end with a better chance of a healthy pup where you don't have lots of extra vet bills, genetic health problems etc....down the road. You'll probably get a better temperamented dog. (I know that's not always the case, but the odds are better)

I DO share and understand your excitement. Keep us posted. Good luck.

Also, I don't know what size of Poodle you are getting, but if you are getting a toy Poodle, don't they normally wait untill the pups are about 10weeks before they sell them? I know that with Chis and other tiny breeds you should't buy one under 10-12 weeks.....is it that way if Poodles too?
I've also learned that when a breeder sells his dogs based on color or sex and not on the individual quality of the dog, that you should be wary of the breeder.

Anywho, good luck with finding the perfect pup!

I'd check them out more too...if they won't let you see the parents, breed "tiny toys" and mixes....I'd beware of them .

Spaying is usually more than neutering as it's a more complicated surgery.
