There will be a Jane Goodall Special: Sunday, June 12, 2005, on the Animal Planet channel.
The special is about human and animal interacions and communication. The airring time is 8:00 PM, eastern time. I guess that is means 5:00 PM, for those of us on the west coast. Check your local listings. It looks pretty interesting! |

I'm already tearing up.
I personally feel mankind is on the brink of great discoveries in animal/human comunication! The Meerkat special which aired right before this one was a knockout! This will probably be on again later tonight if anyone misses this. |

Kit,
I wish everyone could see this!!! Jane Goodall has been such a wonderful mentor for me. I'm 48 years old. I grew up reading about her work. Back then, there wasn't much out there on the type of intense observations and interactions she experienced with the Gahmbi chimps. Too bad there isn't some way this could be shared with all of the members of this forum. If you have a friend with a VCR, call them and have them tape it for you, or go watch it with someone. It will air again at 8:00 PM, west coast time. |

Wasn't that awesome? I thought that African Grey Parrot was unbelieveable...so cool! For anyone who didn't see it, this bird had a vocabulary of over 1000 words. He loved going in a car and asked, (I think it was) his owner's friend if he could go in her car. She said, "I don't have a car." He said, "Get one, order one." He absolutely is of high intelligence and using language with complicated thought processes going on. He remembered things from months before and would talk about them and he talked about his future. The owner said, "give me a kiss." The bird said, "I can't reach you." There were all kinds of examples. Too cool! Then they did an experiment where the woman went down in the basement and the bird was upstairs in his cage. They had a video on both of them. The woman opened an envelope of photos which she had never seen. As she looked at the first one of a flower, the bird said something about a flower. When she looked at a photo of someone in a car, he spoke of the car. Then at the last moment, she noticed a tiny detail which she said, at first wasn't noticeable. The person in the car had their head sticking out of the window a bit. Then after the bird spoke of the car, he, at the moment she noticed this detail, said something like, "that's cool...his head out window." Or "be careful." (I forget exactly) But these were just a few examples of what they showed to be telepathy. Then they showed other animals with what they thought were similar mood reading capabilities, but not to that extent, as far as they know at this time. But there were all kinds of amazing stories. If it airs again, I hope everyone can see it.

Sure blows the old, outdated theory of "brain size" as a measurement of intelligence even further out of the water!lol!
I hope if anyone sees when this special is going to air again, they will post it here, so more people can watch. |

Oh, I wish I could have seen this.
I'll keep my fingerst crossed that they decide to put it on free to air down here. Is the african grey parrot called Alex? I remember seeing a special on an african grey called Alex and he blew me away. I dreamt of having one after that, although I'm not a bird person so it's not really my kind of pet. Ahhh.. but I still dream. LOL Cass. |

Yes! I've seen some shows with Alex, too! This bird is also an African Grey, but it's not Alex.
There are some people, studying the levels of intelligence in animals, who claim the African Grey to be the smartest animal on earth, after man! So much for calling people "bird brains" when they're acting "dumb"! WAY BIG, LOL!!! Fellow Global Pawites, do your best to catch this special! |

The segment in the special that really got to me, was when the scientist who was studing the orcas who beach themselves in order to prey on seals, walked into the water to interact and touch them.
He said he did this because he sensed they were trying to communicate with him! Living in the northwest, I have seen orcas in the wild. These are one of my favorite animals. We'll see if I can get through this segment without , this time! |
