Bitty has started something that really cracks me up.
As many of you know, we are enrolled in an obedience class, and she is being clicker trained. I mainly give her bits of hotdog as treats, which makes her a very eager student. Well, today we went out for a potty break. I gave the command, "Potty." She squatted and peed. I clicked, treated, and praised. I gave the command again a few seconds later, knowing she sometimes goes again, and she did. Click, treat, praise. Then I said it again a few seconds later. This time, I got a funny look from her, and she squatted, with maybe a drop of pee as a result. I thought nothing of it (but went through the routine again absentmindedly), but I soon realized, every single time I said it, she'd squat, but no pee! From her squat, she would look up at me expectantly every time, though. She started just squatting on the "Potty" command, expecting a click, treat, and praise! So, as I said.... Overtrained, maybe? ![]() |

Hmmm... can I trade you? I wouldn't mind a dog that peed on command.

I think of all training commands, that one's my favourite because it comes in soooo hand especially when at raes or traveling! Only OC's is different, "go pee" once and he pees "go pee" twice and he poops

My sentiment exactly. Delsi (my 13 year old Chi.) has been peeing on command since she was just a few months old because we were on the go so much I suppose. Now Zada (my 6 month old Yorkie) goes potty on command from just observing my talking to Delsi and what she does with the word "potty". I've never given treats for this, but I always praise.

If you are giving the cue and marking a squat with the clicker (and the squat is "non-productive"), you are technically marking a squat, not urination. Which, *is* a good trick, especially if you are a practical joker...but put a different cue to it other than "pee"...like "Bitty, what do you think of this new rug?"
Disclaimer...don't try this until your dog is 100% reliable with both cues. ![]() |
