The people accross the street from me have peeed me off to no end!
I First moved in here 3 yrs ago and they had *free kittens* in their front yard..I thought to myself "Okay, maybe an accident"...every summer since then they always have atleast 2 -3 litters every summer for *free* to who ever stops by to get one. Well I said something last year to the effect that if they needed help finding a good cheap place to spay/neutur I knew someone and of course they say they don't believe in it. So now 2 weeks ago yet again *free kittens* and then just the other day to my suprise *free puppies* goldens at that! I am so angry...I wish I could do something to make them stop! |

Oh, that is infuriating. I guess lots of people just don't have any imagination. I mean...they have to know about the over population of cats and dogs. What could they be thinking? I wonder if you could make a group mailing....a flyer that encourages spaying and neutering and include some statistics on the euthanization of cats and dogs in America....and about the pitiful state they're in, as they await adoption.....lonely, bored, miserable. You could pass them out all over the neighborhood, so they don't think you're picking on them only. (well....they might, but who cares?)
I can see how this would drive a real animal lover nuts. |

There has to be something you can do. Maybe try talking to a shelter and see if they know of anything you can do. I would imagine they are pretty up-to-date on local laws and might be able to give you something to go with.

Try talking to your local animal shelter. Our shelter will actually come out and do an evaluation of a family. They meet with the family and discuss ways to counteract the overpopulation problem. They offer classes for the owners and dogs, and lots and lots of info on why we need to have our pets altered. Maybe they could get through. If your shelter doesn't have a program like this, I highly recommend you help them get one started.
Prevention is our only cure! |

I really feel for what you're having to stand by and witness. If these folks are in the beginning stages of animal hoarding, this will only get worse. I would do a research on the specific animal control laws in your area, including the maximum number of (adult) dogs and cats allowed per household. If they are clearly exeding this limit, you may have some leverage. If the dogs are unlicensed, are not wearing tags, or allowed to roam "at large". this gives you a little more leverage when they keep getting reported, warned and ticketed.
One word of caution: These are your neighbors, people you have to "co-exist" with, in a manner of speaking. Some people can get very nastie and vindictive. Their behavior already indicates a self centered point of view and a disreguard of the feelings of their own pets, and where all of those kittens and puppys will end up. Not a good sign. Please, be careful in what you say or do... Good Luck! |

Darkness, was that grilling you got from Animal Control and in retaliation to your call about the neighbors? Or was it from the neighbors themselves? There's no getting through to people like that. Very rarely. In my area, certain members of the population identify very strongly with their animals reproductive organs. To have them removed would be like having their own removed. It's infuriating. I try to get to the kids with humane education, but it's an uphill battle. Kids don't have the final say and don't have money or transportation for getting to the vet. I look at it as an optomistic investment in the future.

Well basically when I called animal control they asked for my info and then before I knew it they where knocking on my door and when I opened the door they where asking about the house and such with all the animals and of course they saw my boys and Mini yet only asked for the boys information..papers, rabies certificates and such..never asked for Mini's. Then asked if they where Pitts and when I informed them they where Boxers they wanted to see their AKC papers and after I showed them that is when the guy sort of laughed and said "Well with 2 big dogs like that and a toddler in the house I wanted to make sure all was safe"..I said well you don't need to worry about my dogs you need to worry about that mess accross the street and that's when he said that as long as they where confined and they didn't see that they looked neglected or abused they couldn't so anything.
I was furious! |

Where do your neighbors live? If it's close to me, I can dress in all black and tip toe to their house and whoosh...the doggies and kitties all disappear....
Oh well, it was a good thought wasn't it. What a shame about those precious animals. Maybe we can get Bob Barker (price is right and animal advocate) to send them a special letter asking them to have their animals spayed and neutered. What really scares me is the fact that the animals are "free". I have had first hand experience about letting a free animal go to a stranger. Oh well, that's another story. Please keep us informed of your efforts and maybe sometime soon someone will come up with a solution. Thanks for all your caring and concern. |
