Another pet meets its death in a locked car...
I wanted to share a sad story that happened yesterday, because maybe I can vent then.
I'm up here in Wisconsin. It's been about 90+ degrees al week. I live near a very popular tourist town. On Wednesday, some tourists to the area were walking the strip with their pet parrot, forgive me, I don't remember the exact type, a small green one. This parrot was beloved by an 11 year old boy, and he would sit on the boys shoulder as they walked up and down for a few hours (not hard to do in this town). Well, a dog of another tourist, barked and scared the bird, and although its wings were clipped it was able to fly about ten feet and sit on a businesses canopy. They were worried about the bird's safety, so on Thursday, when they went to walk and explore more shops, they left the bird in its cage, IN THE CAR!!! Approx 1 hour and 15 minutes after the tourists left the car, a foot patrolmen was ticketing the car for being at an expired meter when he noticed the cage in the front seat. Upon further inspection he noticed the bird laying on the floor of the cage. He opened the door(the windows were down), and discovered the bird was dead. Upon the owners return the boy was crushed to find that his bird was dead. Now, at 11, I don't know if the boy would have been fully capable of understanding what leaving the bird in the car would have done, but can you tell me one reason why this father would not have known that leaving a bird in a car in 90+ weather in the middle of a parking lot would produce a dead bird. I find this completely inexcusable! How can this person have lived long enough to produce a child, but not have been able to figure this out. Suppose he'd let us put him in the car for a few hours?? |

This infuriates me as well.
Unfortunately it's all too common. Dogs, cats, animals of all kinds and even small children left in cars for long peroids of time. On days when even a short amount of time kept confined, in what ends up being an oven, can do serious damage or even cause death. Apart from more education and perhaps more ad campaigns, I'm not sure what can be done about it though. Cass. |

Yeash...I wouldn't even feel comfortable leaving an animal in a car in good weather (like mid 50's to 60's) just because of the idiots that are running around. You never know what might happen.
One more animal bites the dust because of a persons stupidity.... |

Oh that is so sad. What is wrong with people? How much IQ does it take? I see cars with dogs in them and they have the windows rolled down about 3 inches. That's still not enough. Cars get HOT! I wish there was a way to get the word out more. I mean...they put it in the newspaper, on the TV news. What more does it take to knock the sense into people? It is infuriating and so very sad.

What always amazes me is hearing someone at a dog show being called to their car because their animal is in there and in distress. Can we start a program where the AKC records those infractions and 2 strikes and you're out!
I just don't understand. It's not brain surgery. You open up the car after it sitting in the sun and it's too hot to get into. This happens to you your entire life. How can you not make the connection when you leave your dog in there. |

No offense, but some people are just plain stupid! Some things, such as this, seem second nature to most, but just like someone mentioned, they even leave kids in the car. DUH! I remember one day after church we stopped at a 7-11 and my husband went to get me a coffee. As I was sitting there, in my AIR, I noticed two small kids, in car seats!, sitting in the closed up car next to me. I opened my door to see if that car was running, all the windows were up, and nope! sure wasn't! At that point my husband comes to the car- I jump out and say "be back!" Go in the store and yell, who belongs to the silver car outside? A woman says I do, and well i went off! She just didn't get it! It was at least 85 that morning and you know that it's hotter inside the car. I ended up calling the police b/c she honestly wasn't listening to what I was saying. I tried to be nice, but I don't have a high tolerance of dumb people. (sorry, I know that sounds really harsh!)
Anyway- that was a story that really had no point, other than it happens all the time. When I was dating my husband, he had these "flyers" that told the dangers of keeping your pet in a car. I loved those b/c whenever we saw a dog locked up, we just put one on the window... I wish I knew where I could obtain them again. Anyone know? |

That's shocking!
Good for you for telling that woman off and calling the police. My best friend has told me stories about when she was a young kid and her mother's boyfriend use to drive to the pub with her and her two little sisters in the car and he'd make them sit in the car for hours while he drank. No matter what the weather was like (that's why I mentioned the kids in my first post). Some people are just morons, I think. Cass. |

I hate to see stupid people leaving pets in the car. We just moved to a new neighborhood recently and as I was walking Maggy she kept wanting to go to this van and she was really pulling me and whimpering. Im so glad I trusted her instincts because when we got there I noticed a dog in there and the windows were only down about 2 inches and it was 90 out. I remembered seeing the owner of the van there at 7am and it was noon when I seen the dog. There was a guy there working and i asked him if it was his van and he said no so I came in and called the cops and they sent animal controls within minutes and they took the dogs. There were 2 dogs in there and the animal control officer was sweating after being in there for just a few minutes. he said if they would have been in there not even a half hour later they would have died. The ownerd didnt come back until 5 that evening!!! And the worst part is they lived in the h ouse where the van was parked. They didnt want the dogs loose in their house so they put them in their van!!!

here is a link to a site with a leaflet. Also our animal control has a different one. I can stop by there sometime this week and find out where they get theirs too if you would like. It has a dog in a car and hes pressed up against the windw trying to get out. Its really a heartbreaking illustration but it gets through to people.
I don't see the link, but that would be great if you find out where they get them from. I really miss having them. Even when I notice dogs in cars and I say something to the manager, or whoever, at the store- not everyone feels like it's a "big deal" so there isn't always that sense of urgency. I think by placing the leflet, it can be educating without making the person feel they are being attacked. Some people won't care or een read it, but I like to think that some people don't just have a clue and this would wake them up. Anyway, thanks for getting the info! |

I would like that link too.
One of the police officers in my area actually built a pet resort because of all the dogs that were being left in the cars during the summer. He makes a fortune now, over a million a year gross, and recommends it constantly while he is working. See his resort www.pamperedpaws.net It's the kennel I used to manage. |
