Need Help! BUGS!

I am not used to living somewhere where guys don't come and spray for bugs, but now we live in a house in a woodsy neighborhood and there are spiders, flies, ginormous crickets, these tiny little bugs that fly in front of my computer screen just to P me off! (I kill one and another appears out of thin air!) I have no idea what to use to get rid of them. It would have to be safe to use around the dogs & cats. Any suggestions. No ants so far *knock on wood* but I get bitten by who knows what every night. I never am without an itching bite on me, spiders? flies? mosquitoes? I'm sure they all feast on my blood at night while I sleep!

I need help!

to anyone who can help me get rid of them!

I live on a lake and have problems with spiders, mosquitos and gnats. We were told to get Seven liquid spray and use it on the outside of the house. To prevent them from finding their way into the house we just use regular raid house and garden spray on the sills and door jams. My vet tells me that as long as the dog and cats don't lick the window sills and door frames the raid is ok to use. (keep them out of the room when the spray is wet) With the Seven don't let them eat the grass or lick the outside of the house. (of course don't let them near when the spray is wet) I have been using these products with my vet's approval for fifteen years and have not had a problem. Just be aware that it may take a couple of times to get completely through the house depending on how well you can prevent your animals from coming in contact with the spray

The inside of the house thing sounds good! I'll look into that. My in-laws who live upstairs have 4 dogs. I'd have to ask DH to tell them NOT to let the dogs eat the grass. But I'd be too worried since their dogs are kinda goofy anyway.

I used to live in a house with alot of spiders. I bought a couple of geckos and let them loose in the house. I suppose that's not very responsible gecko husbandry but there were alot less spiders

You can buy Sevin Liquid and Sevin Dust. The liquid can be sprayed around window sills and floor boards and the dust can be sprinkled in the yard. You can google search it and read the back of the package to see the warning labels. I used the dust in my yards to control fleas. I havn't seen a flea yet this year! It says on the back it is safe for animals and you can even sprinkle it on the carpet and right on your dog for fleas. I personally wouldn't do that because any dog could have an allergy to it. When I put it in my yard I don't let my dogs out for a few days just in case. It says it kills all kinds of bugs like ants, spiders, fleas, centipedes, etc.

Biting bugs were the main reason we lasted only 20 months in TN. and moved back to CA. Every time I was biten, even with chiggers, they got infected. If there were only ONE biting bug in a two mile radius, I would be the one it would seek out. I'm not kidding. My doctor said she had never seen anyone as effected by insects as I am, and to wear repellent at all times. I said no thank you.......can't live like that.
A quick tip about ants. Don't kill them outside. They actually kill termites. (something pest control wont let you know. In fact they will kill your ants for you because then you will get termites).

Thumbs down

You guys don't know what biting insects are until you've been to Winnipeg in the summer. Canada has been hitting the news with terrible reports of out of control mosquito counts and threat of West Nile Virus. NOt enjoyable here AT ALL

I don't understand how you could get rabies...bugs have no saliva and rabies goes through saliva. *shrug* Certain small animals can carry rabies, but I know rats usually do not so there must be a few others.

I am not going to be wearing SSS all the time and since these bugs are in the house, I just need to find a way to keep them outside. Especially after the baby's born.

I am going to try raid ot that sevin stuff. I hope it works, thanks for the suggestions! :-)

Rabies from bug bites? Well that's the first I've ever heard of that.

Glad I dont live over there.
I have spiders etc but to keep them at bay in the house I use bug bombs once a year
And a 410 shotgun certainly slows the snakes down.
I sure am going to try and lay my hands on some of that dust Barrett

I know all about Avon's SSS. No matter how much you dilute it, it's still to oily on the skin and on the dogs. I ended up buying a few small battery powered things that give off a high frequency (people can't hear) and wore that all the time. I bought a larger one for the outside table. Those worked best.
Sheila, only mammals can spred rabies, and yes, so can mice and rats, but never insects.

WHAT ANIMALS CAN GET RABIES?
Rabies is carried mainly by wild animals like raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats. Humans, dogs, and cats can also get rabies. Squirrels, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, chipmunks, rats, mice, and rabbits usually do not get rabies.

What kinds of animals spread rabies?

The rabies virus can infect any mammal (if it has hair or fur, it's a mammal), but it is only common among certain ones like bats, skunks, foxes and raccoons. Cats, dogs and livestock can also get rabies - and spread it to their owners - if they do not have special shots to protect them. Rabies is very rare among rodents like squirrels, rats, mice and chipmunks. Birds, fish, snakes, lizards,. turtles, and insects (bugs) cannot spread rabies.
