Dog tag -- what info to include?

Winston chewed his first tag all to heck, so it's time to order a new one.

The first side will say:

"WINSTON"
THE OURLASTNAMES
212-555-9090
123 OURSTREET
OURTOWN, ST

What I have so far for the second side:

AVID MICROCHIPPED
#123-456-789
1-800-336-2843
VPI #X-12345
REWARD!!

Is the VPI number worth including? If he were lost and injured, I would want a vet to treat him without thinking twice. But as a consequence of that, there's no room to include his vet's phone number.

And as a side consequence, the tag is now chock full of info and makes me look paranoid and obsessive, although there's no getting away from that because it's true.

-- And I read at one website that putting your dog's name on his tag doubles the chance that whoever finds him will keep him.

Opinions, please!

I think it wise to keep his name on the tag anyway. He'll be less stressed if someone he doesn't know at least calls him by name.

As for the VPI - Honestly, I don't know of any vet that would treat an emergency case to at least stabilize them with owner info on a tag being right there. Even emergency animal clinics treat the injured within reason without knowing who the owner may be. jmo

So do you think it would be better to include his vet's phone number?

His vets name would be great. No need to include the phone as thats easy enough to find. Something like: My Vet is Dr. -------

So then the back would read:

AVID MICROCHIPPED
#123-456-789
1-800-336-2843
VET: DR. MARY VETSNAME
* * REWARD * *

(I like the stars better than exclamation points. )

I'm starting to feel silly... and yet compelled to keep posting to make sure the best info gets on there, LOL.

I think you have all the pertinent info, however, I don't include names on any of my tags.
Call me paranoid, but many dogs, especially a Cavalier, would to me, be a high theft item. Combine that with all the info you're providing a thief, via the tag, any con artist worth his game could function as though it is his own dog, however, not knowing the dog's name is a big red flag, and difficult to get around. I wouldn't put your last name either, just the address. They don't need to know who you are to return your dog. Just my opinion.

actually, i wouldput the vet number, not the name - vets retire, you may travel - the phone number of the clinic will never change most likely.

personally if you are doing two sided, youre gettinga plastic one, right?
id just skip it, and get a stainless steel. i order mine from boomerangtags, and they stand by them 100% and will replace if damaged.

my tags for my dogs read:

BOWIE
my name
999-999-9999 CELL
999-999-9999 VET
NEEDS MEDICATION

i toyed with just putting AVID MICROCHIP, but opted not to. those that hvae access to scanners will use them, and if they dont, tthe chip is of no use.

i would not use the vets name (think about it - last names can be common, etc). i include NEEDS MEDICATION on mine, because they really DO, but besides, it would also encourage people to get them to a vet clinic, which i would encourage.

I guess i'm more basic. I have their name, and my number on one tag, then they have their microchip tags, and their rabies tags.

That's where I order from, as well, and their plastic tags are really solid. Winston would never have chewed on his if he hadn't been chewing on his Avid tag (which now looks like it was put through a garbage disposal).

I figure that putting the Avid number is another means of identification... people can call the number in if they don't have access to a scanner or if we don't answer our phones. That's another way to get in touch with the vet.

The name thing is troubling for me because especially in Los Angeles (and while he's the World's Cutest Puppy), theft is my greatest nightmare.

I wouldn't put the word 'Reward' on it. No way! That's just asking for the dog to be stolen.
People do it all the time, steal dogs...wait for the owners to offer a reward and then "Hey, guess what? I found your dog." Sad but true. By putting the word 'Reward' on his tag, you're telling everyone that yes...if you steal my dog I'll definately give you money to have him back.

Cass.

But... I will! I'd soooo much rather someone steal him and return him to me than steal him and sell him to somebody else.

i use the plastic boomerang tags too. they're very nice.

mine just have name/address/phone number on them. they have separate microchip tags. though, if i ever have to replace these tags, i'll get their chip numbers on the back of their nametags.

I have my dogs license tag on them. Their rabies tag...which also has the name of my vet on it. Their microchip tag...which has the ID # and the 1800 number on it. On their ID tags...their name is on one side and on the other side our address and both our cell phone numbers.

I don't give out my name or address. I just put their name and my home and cell numbers. They wear thier microchip tag, but somehow I think that's worthless anyway. If anyone wants to steal your dog the Vets. never scan any dog brought in by anyone anyway.
