Meteor showers.
I thought some of you may be interested in this..
The Perseids are one of the two strongest and most dependable annual meteor showers (the Geminids of December are the other). Earth’s orbit carries us through the densest part of the Perseid meteoroid stream every year around August 11th or 12th, so these “shooting stars” appear almost like clockwork. Their rates, however, can vary a lot from year to year. An observer under a dark sky might typically see more than 60 Perseids per hour between midnight and dawn. Since the waning crescent Moon will be only three days from new at the time of shower maximum, this is an opportune year for watching them. |

I spent most of last night way outside of town, very very nice dark skies. Took my Scope out too, wanted to check out a few things, the Andromeda galaxy (M31), was extra pretty. Saw some really great meteors. I'm a lover of astronomy, so things like this, keep me up all night long lol. And Nevada has some of the darkest skies in the US, very very little light pollution, so I particularly love living here during events such as that. I am staying home tonight, but tomorrow night, will leave again.

Thanks for sharing
I love that sort of thing. I just hope the fog rolls out so we can see them. I love living on the coast, but I wish we got a little less fog.QW, you start school already? My first day isn't until Sept. 7. |

Used to get to watch the northern lights quite a bit when I was a kid. We lived on a farm in Northeastern Wyoming, up near the Montana border, very dark up there. The aurora lit up once in awhile, fascinated me. I'd stand out there for hours as a kid, watching it. Thought it was the coolest thing. Don't see it much here. Though when I lived in Las Vegas, one time, the aurora was spectacular, even down there, with all that light pollution. Waves crossing the sky.. VERY unusual sight to see down there.

We have watched the meteor showers every year since I was a kid. My mom would wake us up at midnight and we would go outside in our pj's and blankets and lay down on lawn chairs to watch. Then my dad would usually carry us back to be once we fell asleep again. When I lived in California, in the Mojave Desert, the skies were so dark and we would sometimes see 3 to 4 meteors per minute at its peak. Very cool. I have a great telescope that I bought my husband for his birthday 3 years ago. He never uses it so I took it over. It has a remote control and all you have to do is punch in the cooridnates to a planet or sattelite and it will find it for you and track it. You can download any coordinate to anything you want to find off the internate and the gps in the telescope will find it. (I can't believe my hubby doesn't like this telescope!!) The one thing I have never seen is the northern lights! Hubby and I flew to Alaska just to see them and it was cloudy and rained the whole trip. Once we got back on the plane to fly home it cleared up! I almost cried!

I have that as well. Mine is a Meade refractor with Autostar. I love it. Been very happy with Meade, and plan on going back to them to buy another in the probably near future. It's addictive LOL |

I just read about that on my news thing that comes up when I sign onto the Internet. Totally cool dudes! I just love that stuff too. The northern lights are awesome too. Hope you can see those sometime.
I live in a super dark place in the Selkirk Mountains so if the old woman can just stay awake long enough, that'll be cool. Barrett, your parents were wonderful! That's such a nice thing to do for kids...makes their lives fun and interesting. No wonder you came out with such a nice personality which shows in your posts. I think that sounds fantastic to have a telescope. How fun! Santa-a-a-a-a-a.....yoo hooo.... Carrie |

Thanks Carrie! My mom made our lives very interesting! She loved dragging us to every art show and museum in the united states. We would drive to a different state every summer. We didn't have much money so we always camped on the way there and home. I think that is why I LOVE camping so much and traveling. Becoming an airline pilot someday should be right up my alley! |
