Question Swimming Pools

I need some input from those of you with swimming pools.

We're looking for a house to rent for a year or so and my wife has found one with a swimming pool that she LOVES. The problem is there is not a separate fence around the pool to keep the dog and kids out. Kids aren't much of an issue because we go with them anytime they go outside. The dog however normally spends an hour or so in the morning and evening outside by herself.

What are y'alls experiences with dogs having access to a pool like this? She's never gone for a swim or anything but she does love bath time. I can't get excited about the possibility of always having a wet dog wanting in the house.

I know the best thing would be to have a separate fence for the pool, but since we'd be renting, i don't see that happening.

Is it above ground or inground, have a deck around it?? etc. I know dogs that will wade into water when no one is around, but they don't go swimming much unless you're throwing stuff for them to get. No matter what type of pool, just make sure the dog knows how to get out and where the steps are. I still wouldn't leave a dog unsupervised around a pool, just like I wouldn't leave a child unsupervised either.

It's a fairly small in ground with steps at one end.

I have a pool but it is above ground with a deck built around and a gate so my dogs don't have access. However my aunt has an aussie shepard and he lives in her pool. He walks right up the ladder and jumps in with the kids. . My only concern with dogs in pools is the chlorine, I can't imagine it is good for the dog to swim in because they tend to drink it and all those chemicals have to be bad for them.

Thanks for the responses. We looked at the house last night and we both love it now and will be dropping off the deposit and all the paperwork in about an hour. My kids are very excited about the pool too. Hopefully Shelby won't end up having any problems with it.
Thanks again.

I have had an in ground pool for 30 years and never had a dog just jump in it. That said, I have heard of dogs drowning in unattended in pools. If you are worried about it, Home Depot and Lowes sells cheap plastic stretch fencing cheap that you could partition off the pool with.

Update:
Shelby seems to be doing well with the pool. Last weekend we went for a swim and I wanted to see how she would do so I coaxed her on to the steps.... well it was more like I picked her up and set her on the steeps. She just stood there and occasionally stuck her face under. After getting out she got excited and slipped in and swam to the side but had a hard time getting out. A couple days ago we came home from dinner and she was wet and there was a wet spot by the steps. I'm guessing she was just standing in the water because her back was dry.

I don't think it's going to be an issue once the novelty wares off. I wanted her to get failure with it incase she fell in she’d know what to do. I'm still concerned though because she isn't a very good swimmer.
