Mia was playing at the door just after eating and pulled the rubber stripping off of the door.. Well I shut the door and brought her to the puter room and guess what she went poopy..I scolded her and put her in her crate.. I think by her scratching and pulling at the rubber she was trying to tell me she had to go out...I didn't grasp the consept
but I think she has.. Or maybe it was the cats she was after on the porch.. |

That's a good sign that she's starting to understand where she should go to the bathroom..
Be careful about letting her out every time she scratches at the door, though. I did that with Ripley, and he soon started scratching at the door about 15 times a day, just so he could roll in the grass. ![]() |

"she went poopy..I scolded her and put her in her crate"
If you misjudge and she goes in the house, always take her promptly outside so she can hopefully associate the peeing/pooping with going outdoors. If you just put her in her crate after an accident, you'll miss an opportunity to try connecting the two things: potty---outside. Plus, she may associate the crate with punishment and may come to dislike her crate. The crate should be only used as her little, happy, secure den. Just my .02 worth. Also, in my opinion, it's not a great idea to scold because sometimes we didn't take them out in time and they just can't help it. Or they may not feel it coming ahead of time enough. Sometimes it is said that they may think you're scolding them for going to the bathroom and not for going to the bathroom INSIDE. So, they may try to inhibit themselves from going when you do take them out. I think a simple "no" without too big of a deal, just a regular voice is fine. But showing them what you want is best....taking them out often and praising lavishly when they go....always staying with them so you can see if they go. Carrie |
