Cool Dog Senses

I went a on three day road trip and took Simba with me. We were staying at a hotel, so I had to make sure that I took Simba out regularly, so he can do this business. Well, one night I couldn't sleep, and simba was WIDE awake, so i decided to take him outside. The closest patch of grass from the hotel entrance is about 10 meters away. We walked to the grass, and he took a ****, and then he barked at this guy who was all the way at the end of the street walking in our direction.

This bothered me a lil because Simba doesn't bark at people unless he's in the middle of playing with them. He DEFINATELY doesn't bark at strangers, he'd rather approach them and get them to fall in love with him.

So this guy he bark at was still fairly far away from us and Simba just stood still, and he started to have a soft growl. At this point i decided to take Simba back to the hotel room, and when i picked Simba up, the guy started to pick up his pace and started crossing the street. I didn't want to make it obvious, but i tried to pick up my pace too. Simba and I were 6ft away from the door when the guys met up with us.

He started out by saying "what you got there?"
and i answer with "my dog"
And this strangers starts petting him while i'm carrying him, which is weird to me because plenty of people were petting simba at my vacation and they always waited for me to put him down. Anywho, Simba was struggling, and he didn't like this person at all. This was unusal because simba LOVES attention. All of a sudden this guy was asking me to show him out to get to a market place that was closed. So i just got out of that situation ASAP.

I wouldn't even have noticed that guy was there if Simba hadn't barked. OMG I LOVE SIMBA FOR THAT. I officially trust Simba's judgment on strangers.

Simba is a Collie, right? How old is he? Herding dogs are bred to protect their charges. And he's starting to show those instincts. I've noticed it with my GSD that I had before and my Dobe now how some dogs, not all, but some have an uncanny ability to sense friendly strangers and ones who are up to no good. Even my Lab demonstrated that on one occasion and they are not known for great protective instincts and she never has shown anything close before or since. But there was one episode where something threatening did happen. And a similar incident happened when I had the GSD before I had my Lab. He became gnashing teeth and very scary. It only happened once. Otherwise that GSD was as friendly as my Lab....you'd never know he had any protective instincts. LOL. My Dobe pup started showing these instincts at about 4 months of age and he is showing that ability to distinguish between normal situations and abnormal ones. He did come between me and an intruder on one occasion. The intruder was a friend of my son's who walked right into my son's apartment in the middle of the night while we were all asleep. I didn't know this guy and it was just not normal to Lyric to have someone "sneak" in like that...so quietly. That dog scared the you know what out of that guy, growling, snarling and standing in one place, all muscled up...darted out in front of me after we both sprang up, but didn't lunge or bite the guy, stayed half way between us, growling, barking etc.

I also see that he is more comfortable (and sooner) around some strangers than others. They are marvelous creatures!

Glad everything turned out ok.

Carrie
