Breeds good with little kids
Hey guys we are considering getting another dog probably not for a year or a couple of months. It is still in the early stages, but I was thinking maybe a papillon? We definately want a small dog, good with little kids, and one that will not be agressive towards lots of people or dogs. (We have Red for that
) I am open to all suggestions . Thanx for your input. ![]() |

I've always been a Pug fan. You can go to www.breederweb.com and pick a breed...it will give you a bar graph of everything from trainability to maintenance...even how that breed does with kids and other dogs. It's a great resource!
you would need to click on the left for breed information |

I've heard pugs can be awesome with kids. And I think I heard Boston Terriers are too. But I'm not sure. XD

A friend has a pug who absolutely loves kids & is wonderful with them.
The only thing I would worry about with such a small breed like a papillon or even a chi would be that they could accidently be hurt by a child. A pug is a small dog but sturdier. ![]() |

I would worry about a pap or other tiny dog getting hurt by a small child too. My sister has a boston terrier, however, and two little kids, and she says he's awesome with kids.

A Pug would be a great little breed for a familiy with children. Also another breed that comes to mind is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. A quote in a breed book I read a while ago keeps comining to mind when I think about the CKC and kids which was the CKC is like bread to butter when it comes to kids. Or something like that.

With any breed, you need to do some research on their lineage and the breeder. Meet the sire and dam of the breed you are wanting as that can make a big difference. There are no guarantees in personality, but training and conditioning at home and a good genetic background is a good start. Always find a breeder willing to stand behind their puppies.
The AKC website helps with many breed standards, as well. |

A friend of mine has two Papillons and they are really cute dogs, but boy do they ever shed a lot. You have to consider the shedding and if you don't mind all the hair. Another to consider is grooming. Some breeds need regular grooming. I really like the Bostons. They dearly love to play with kids or anyone, and at the same time will be just a couch potato whenever you want. I had Bostons for years. Great dogs, but don't buy from a pet store or BYB. Find all the people who show these dogs and buy from one of them.

I have heard that Papillons are not great dogs with children... they are somewhat high-strung. But of course, any dog can do well with kids if properly trained and introduced.
Cavaliers are supposed to be wonderful with kids -- their natures are gentle by default (when well-bred) and that extends to children as well as people who don't like dogs. Winston loves, loves, loves to meet kids on our walks. He can be a total devil-dog to me, biting and jumping, and for a kid he will immediately roll over for a belly rub. Pugs are also legendary for loving children. Bostons are totally fun, too, but more hyper in their younger years. |

Don't forget the Bulldog as well.
Pugs are typically very good with children. ![]() |

Pugs are fine and dandy with small kids.. but I still worry about the kids hurting the pug. I know of some people that got a 8 week old pug puppy.. (the kids are my best friend's grand kids)... anyhow, one of the boys was holding the pug, a sibling pushed the kid.. he fell, pug hit her head, developed seizures and died a few days later. That happened two weeks ago.
An ADULT pug, and very close constant supervision, is a safer bet when it comes to kids.. IMO. |

I agree with pugdawg!! Depending on how little your kids are I would look into adopting an older puppy pug or a boston or a bulldog (can't forget those!!)" Crossfire"
. A few of my friends have pugs and they have 7 & 8 year old kids they are a great little dog. |

Don't forget about Corgis!
They are wonderful with kids, and ours are even "motherly" towards our kids...cleaning faces, making sure everyone gets out the door on time, etc. hehe They are also VERY sturdy to deal with little kids, and extremely trainable (they are incredibly intelligent and wonderful problem solvers). ![]() Good luck picking out your next dog! I know the decision will be a difficult one! ![]() |
