I am copying and pasting this for GermanSHepherdLVR because her keyboard will not allow her too and she posted it for opinions on another forum and she would like your opinions too!

I think this is a great idea, I know Lisa and after the bad experiences that I have had with Pet Sitters and Kennels with Yukon I would be happy to have Lisa doggy sit for me. If only we were closer, she would be the only one I would trust now with my baby. If you have the means to do it then great go for it!

I know you need to move closer because you are the only person I would trust at this point in time. Way too many bad experiences, with not just proffessionals but people who were suppose to be friends. I would never send Yukon to a kennel after the guy there thought it was funny that a rotti kept beating up on Yukon who was then 5 months old. Dog aggression was the result of that one. THen I had a friend sit for us and he got mad at the dog so he beat the hell out of him. THen we hired a Pet Sitter and stuff was rooted through and stolen, plus the dog was yet again abused. THe idiot even bragged about it.
Now just to let everyone know I know that not all Pet Sitters are bad, just the one I hired. My neighbours have a pet sitter come in at least once a month and they think she is the best person ever. I see her out playing with their dog and she is so kind and loving, and she puts a lot of time into exercising the dog. SO this is not a bash on Pet Sitters, it is just a point that not all people are trustworthy and I would never risk my baby again! |

I think it is a great idea and you will be very busy with the local people who already know you. I also think that as long as you are careful with what you take in then you should do great! |

You meant you wanted to run a home boarding facility, right? Doggy daycare is just where people drop their dogs off during their work day and pick them up later.
I'm not sure where you can get insurance for a boarding facility and you may have to get permission from your city to even do it. Same for a doggy daycare. Jessie |

That is true espically if your township has a number of household dogs rule. I think they do where you are too. I think not sure but I think you have to be declared as a dog facility but if your neighbours object or if they are too close distance wise there could be issues. Thanks for bringing that up Jessie, I never even thought of it! |

It's a great avenue, if one if prepared.
I am a full-time dog sitter (among other things) and I offer both daycare as well as long stays. Besides checking into your state's legislature regarding running such a business from home, the other thing you have to very carefully prepare is all your paper-work. I come from a country where people are scared silly of signing something - anything! So what I did was to very carefully incorporate my application form together with a comprehensive background info list as well as any and all disclaimers needed along the way - and worded it in such a manner that owners are first made aware of the importance of the needed information, as well as the fact that there were set limitation to liabilities. The other VERY important thing is to consider if one is prepared for such a venture: the risks involved, as well as the adjustments, and the high tendency of property being peed upon or destroyed is a reality, unless one is super selective about clientelle, limiting doggie day care as a viable means of income, unless you go into overnight and long stay as well...or one manages to secure a few select, very high paying owners. There are actually quite a few other areas that need looking into if one were to set up a responsible as well as lucrative doggie day care centre. It ranges and depends on where you are, what you are able to do, what your limitations are, as well as ranging to include your ability to handle medical emergencies and 1st aid, grooming and the like, but I would think that one of the more important attributes would also be being able to identify, work with and handle dogs of different temperaments/personalities, especially dogs which could be possibly territorial, shy or aggressive. You'll never know how a dog would react, and temperament and behaviour does change in different environments...even day to day sometimes when in a different environment with all the different stimuli. It IS best to be fully prepared. Hope this helps. |
