agresive dalmation
A few months ago, the beginning of summer, I took Kino to the market. While walking there I met a man with a beautiful Dalmation- more white then black. You could tell he was a little agressive, he had a muzzle on and while his owner stood petting Kino the hair on his back was straight up as well as his ears. When his owner bent down he let out a small growl, through all this though he sat very still off to the side like he was told.
This market is about 2 miles from our house so we dont see them too often. Well I was driving to the store last night and I think the Dalmation may have gotten loose...I was driving down a 2 lane one way street when all of a suddent a Dalmation comes running accross the street barking trying to attack the car that was next to me but slightly in front of me. He had to run in front of me to get to that car. I did not hit him, he missed the car next to me and went on his way down the other side of the street. This dog also was more white then black though it was harder to see cuz he was running rather fast. I wish there was something I could have done but If this were the same dog as before then it would not have been safe. He sounded very pissed off when attacking the car. As much as I wanted to help I didnt want to get hurt in the process. (Animal Control was closed at that time) |

Oh wow! I hope the owner found him. That is so dangerous...not only for him, but for anyone who doesn't realize he's aggressive and tries to catch him. A-r-g-g-g!
It just makes you wonder how these dogs get this way doesn't it. Carrie |

Dals seem to be very neurotic these days... Probably thanks to a naturally very high energy level, coupled with the stupid, ignorant BYB's, weak nerves, and hyperactivity... I'm not surprised that a lot of dalmatians are aggressive. Actually, most of them I've met have a nervous growl, or are just plain dominant-aggressive..
It's kind of sad.. I practically grew up attached to the leash of a dal named Sparky, who was the most patient, gently playful dog that ever existed. (She let a 3 year old jump all over her, hang by her neck, and put lipstick on her nose ) So it's never a nice thing to see a breed come to this.. Darn hollywood.. ![]() |

well I duno if its true but I had heard that their brains can become too large for their skulls and they get all agressive and freaky then their brain shuts down cuz of the pressure.

My sister's best friend has a dalmation,Toby. He was adopted by my sister's friend from a friend of a friend. Anyway, Toby was kept in a closet as a tiny pup by his origional owners. When my sister's friend and her family got him he was still a young pup, nine or ten weeks. He's six now and although active in the typical dalmation sense he has a very friendly temperment and he has suffered no ill effects from his puppyhood. Lucky I guess.
It's tricky, as dog lovers we apporach other dogs with caution but also with the assumption that they will be friendly or at least tolerant of others. We do not expect to be greeted with barks or growls and otherwise unpleasant behaviour. Poorly behaved dogs can certainly be a danger. |

dogx3 -- It is tricky sometimes. If I see a dog walking around looking relaxed, I don't expect it to bark and growl at me. if I see a dog walking around nervously or with its hair bristled and the corners of its mouth pulled forward, I DO expect it to bark and growl at me... Sometimes they surprise you... Like Ripley. He looks very relaxed almost everywhere, but when someone makes direct eye contact with the little happy waggy dog, he starts growling and barking.

Hmmmm today I was walking all three pugs.. we were walking a loop I don't normally walk with them, the mail lady that was doing her route told me I should probably turn around.. said there were folks out with a loose dalmatian that had an aggressive streak (those mail carriers really get to know the dogs in the neighborhood). So I took her advice and we went another way.. was not about to see if I'd make it past there or not. Heck no, not with my babies.

That thing about their brains growing too large for their skull is something that people have said about Dobermans. After coming across this in my research prior to getting my Dobe, I have learned that it is strictly rumor, that anatomically and physically, that just flat out does not happen. It's amazing how people have come up with this kind of thing about certain breeds.
Anolther misconception that has been passed around for ages is the negative implication that inbreeding is a horrible thing. Based on the research that I've done on dogs/wolves etc (because I did a lot, as I'm obessed) inbreeding in animals does not produce the same problems as inbreeding in humans. Inbreeding is perfectly natural in animals. There is nothing wrong with inbreeding two fine, healthy dogs. If you take two closely related, terrible examples of a given breed, nasty temperament, lousy conformation and breed them, you are very likely to get puppies with those same flaws. If you take two closely related dogs who are fine examples of a breed, you will more likely get a great bunch of pups. I've read about this. There is line breeding which is commonly done and inbreeding. It's up to the breeder to go about their choice of dogs scientifically and with care. In nature, there are small packs of dogs/wolves and other animals and they quite naturally mix with relatives. And then, from there the "fittest survive." Carrie |

I have heard that rumor about the brain growing to large for their skulls before. The person who told me said that the gunk that collects in the corner of their eyes is the excess brain tissue being pushed out, so if they had eye gunk they would not become aggressive. I laughed so hard I almost cried, I thought it was so funny (being a med student I know that it is impossible)
