Grr..it's mushroom season again
I hate musrooms! I don't like the kind you eat and I hate the ones in my backyard! I spend all day with a hand shovel digging the buggers up so my dogs won't eat them and the next day there are 20 more in thier place! I went to my garden store last year for advise and they told me to spray vinegar on them when they are small. All I ended up doing was burning my grass and the darn things came back anyway! Bailey can see a mushroom head from 100 yards away. She gets a little gleam in her eyes and will run at it at top speed and grab it on the fly. I beg and plead and end up chasing her around the yard trying to catch her before she eats it. This year Lucy has joined in the game. I hate mushrooms!

*Sigh* We don't get a whole lot of snow in the Seattle area. We get the rain instead and have to dig the ugly things up from October thru May.
![]() I swear they weren't in the yard yesterday but today I found about 20 of them! Grrrrr! How can you eat them anyway? They taste like dirt! LOL!!!! My husband loves them and even one of my cats love them. We always do a test to see who the dogs "really" belong too. If we give them a mushroom and the spit them out they are Mommy's little girls. If they eat brussel sprouts and artichoke hearts they are Daddy's little girls. LOL! |

Mmm...I love mushrooms! Shiitake, portabellas, white mushrooms are so good. *drools* When ordering something at a restaurant I always get persuaded with mushroom as an ingredient.
As for my dogs, I didn't realize that other dogs also went nuts with shrooms growing in the yard. The first year I had Kassie she drove me nuts with trying to get them little suckers. I'm so glad that they don't seem to want to grown in my yard anymore for some reason. |

I LOVE mushrooms and am so jealous you guys have them growing in your yards.
None here I'm afraid. I remember when I was a child, my sister and I would go mushroom hunting in the country with our stepfather. We'd hunt through the cow paddocks, Reddog, our setter, galloping around completely oblivious to the large herd of cattle charging at her (which she would always lead towards us) and we'd laugh our heads off at each other when one of us stepped in a cow pat and curse when it was us....and then we'd go home and fry up some freshly picked mushrooms for breakfast. Mmmmmmmm....makes my mouth water just thinking about it. They were always nicest when we hunted them down ourselves. ![]() Cass. |

I only like shrooms if they are done in a wine, garlic sauce served with a good filet mignon. Mmmmmm!
Weird, my dogs don't bother with them. But I don't like them in the yard anyway. They say if you pick them before they open up the spores don't have a chance to spread. I have to worry about the frogs. You can see the nasty things here. My dogs have gotten ahold of these & I have to rinse their mouth out with the hose real quick. So consider yourself lucky that you only have shrooms! |

Mushrooms propagate by spores and rhizomes which are located on the underside of the head. If you pick them with a wet papertowel coming at it from overhead and basicly wrapping the head in the papaertowel and pull up trying not to break the stem. Then dig up a small area around where the mushrooms were and throw that out as well. This works for some kinds of mushrooms but not others but it may be worth a shot.
You could also contact a mycologist and they could tell you if they are poisonous to you or you pets. |

Thanks Owned by Lucy. I bought a book to try and figure out what mushrooms we have in our back yard. I doubt any are poisonous but Bailey ate one when she was a pup and got sick to her stomach. I found the shroom pieces in her vomit and had to run her to the vet. They didn't use charcoal on her but they kept her the whole day for observation. She was fine but it sure scared me. Now I dig the mushrooms up as soon as I see them. She won't eat cooked mushrooms but she will eat the fresh ones in the yard. Go figure!
