Ok, I have to brag a little bit on a couple of my kids. A couple of weeks ago, my 10 year old daughter, Courtney, entered the show ring for the very first time with our 3 year old Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Duchess. Granted, this was a Sanctioned B match, instead of regular conformation, but for Courtney, it was the "real deal", and a nerve-wracking experience. For Duchess, who is our only non-conformation dog (she is not really show quality but is the best showman out of the 4), it was another fun day in the ring. She has previously won several B match Best of Breeds and Group Placements with me as the handler, so this was another walk in the park for her. Anyway, I digress.....
Courtney handled Duchess very professionally (with very little practice), had Duchess' attention the whole time, and ended up taking Best of Breed and a Group Third Placement in the Herding Group!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We never thought Courtney would do so well, and there were some of the conformation judges sitting there watching (as they always like to watch the young kids show) and said that she was a natural at it. Now we're trying to talk her into trying showing a dog again in the near future.....(not as easy as it sounds LOL) |

True story Novel!
We had our 11 year old show at a show a few months back and she has shown at every show since. She loves it! |

Thanks all!
We weren't sure if she would be mature enough to show, but she proved us wrong. She absolutely adores Duchess and loves being able to walk her or even spend time with her. We're hoping that she'll want to show more and more. Right now she's in soccer, so she's not able to go with us much, but I'm hoping by the first of next year, she'll just "have" to handle a dog for me. ![]() I know all about the sickness Novel. We started as "Mom and Dad" when Avalanche started showing, and less than 3 months later, I'm handling and Sherilyn is grooming!!! LOL I've attached a couple of pics so you can see how she did. Sorry Sayuri, I don't think she's interested in showing any other dogs except Corgis. She's suffering from tunnel vision I think. LOL I, on the other hand, would love to show a Shiba. I would be able to add that to the list of breeds I've handled...Cardigans, Pembrokes, Samoyed, Malamute, Border Terrier, _________ (space reserved for next breed hehe) |

I think that is awsome!! I'm working with my 6 year old with obedience. (him training the dog, not me training him...oh wait...hhhmmmm)LOL
I think its great that she's doing so well and actually enjoying it!! At least she doesn't see it as "work" and likes to do it. GOOD JOB!!! |

Are you SURE he's doing the training? LOL
We're so happy that she likes it, and no, she doesn't see it as work. She sees it as playtime between her and the dogs. She has a natural talent with animals in which they just automatically accept her (She got the pet a 680lb white tiger when she was a baby), and that really helps. ![]() |

I think its fantastic when the kids want to be involved! Both my girls were junior handlers growing up and my grandson has already begun to show interest dragging the leash around. lol
When it's nothing but fun for them it really is something to watch them in the ring, their determination and true love for the dog really shines through. When I get a bit too serious in the rings I take a step back and watch the junior handlers to refresh my memory on what its really all about. ![]() She keeps going Winjam and soon she'll be your competition! ![]() |

We'd love to see that happen, Sonja! That would give us more time to spend with her, and it would be a great experience for her, and help her grow and mature (she tends to like her cartoons and gameboy a bit too much!! LOL) Most of the kids we've met on the show circuit have been wonderful and very mature, and I truly believe the Junior's Program has helped them achieve that. Rus & I feel like real novices (well, we are, actually) around some of the Juniors that have been doing this for a few years...a good friend of ours grew up in the Junior Program, and was the top Junior Handler for Cardigans for 2 years, and at 18, has been to Eukanuba and Westminster twice, so she has been so kind as to teach us a few things over the last year or so. She is awesome to watch!
When Phantom hits the ring in January, I hope there is a time when he and Ruby will both be up for Best of Winners, and Courtney "just happens" to have to take one of them in the ring for Rus. I don't mind doing it, but she's so darn cute when she's out there, I'd much rather see her out there with one of the Corgis. Keep your fingers crossed!! ![]() Sherilyn |

The kids really are amazing and those that stick with it turn out to be some of the most awesome handlers I've seen. It really is a neat feeling when you watch your own child do so well and that would be awesome to see both Phantom and Ruby take the wins!
One of my proudest moments was watching my youngest daughter and husband in the ring, Mandy took Winners and BOS with Gabby and my husband took Breed with Ty who was Gabby's son. I don't have the "actual" professional pic online but I do have the one I took when they were setting up for the photo in my album and consider it one of my biggest treasures. Can't wait to see the same pic from your family and at the rate your daughter is going it won't be long! ![]() |
