Pet Names - How'd you pick yours?
Heh, I'm just a thread posting machine today
So I was on the phone with my mom today, and she was talking about how she didn't like the name I have picked out for Gizmo. She said that he'd be better off if I named him "Fudgie". Fudgie. Can you believe it? I have to say I'm a tad bit hurt by this, I mean I really like Gizmo's name, and I think it suits him just fine. I told her that I'm keeping his name as Gizmo, and she went all silent and was like "Oh........." I was wondering if anyone has ever encountered this when naming their pets. Ever have someone be like 'Man, why'd ya pick that name????? ***positive affermation that you like Gizmo's name would be greatly appreciated*** lmao just kidding.... or am I? lmao Soooo in keeping with this topic, why did you pick the specific name for your pet? Or was it a random thing? I chose Gizmo because he looks like Gizmo from the movie Gremlins. |

I like Gizmo...I think it's cute!!! And he does look like the original Gizmo...and I bet he probly acts like a little gremlin too!
![]() OK...so you all are going to think my bf and I are the biggest dorks in the ENTIRE world...but here goes: Joules (pronounced Jewels) is named after the US Thoroughbred racehorse Megahertz. She is my fav racehorse of all time! She is soooo much smaller than all her opponents and she makes them eat her dust! She is last all through the race and then on the home stretch...zoooooom! Past the whole pack to come in first! It really is quite amazing! So, Matt wanted to name her Megahertz and I said no...that was waaaay too dorky! We came up with Joules, which is a measure of electricity so it has the connection to Megahertz PLUS Joules is a ball of energy so it fits her. ![]() |

Let's see...
my past dogs have come to me with names already. Being that they were old and deaf, I just kept their names as they were. But Peanut's original name was to be Poochie Mama. Which I loved. But my family gave me a lot of headache about that. My boyfriend wanted something ironic... ya' know, since she would be a giant dog, he wanted a diminutive name. He thought Peanut, or Tinkerbell, and so on. I didn't like any of them. But as a puppy, she was a little orange ball of fluff, and kind of looked like a giant Peanut. It eventually stuck. And it actually suits her perfectly. At 30" tall, and over 150lbs, she's still my little Peanut. ![]() Bubba was originally named Buddy when we adopted him. But he was just a 6 month old pup so changing his name would be easy. I had worked at a Veterinary Surgical Center sometime ago and fell in love with a little guy named Bubba. He was there for weeks; and every day I'd spend all my free time with him. He loved me. Nobody else could get close to him like I could. I promised him I'd name my next boy after him. And so Buddy became Bubba. And by the way... I think Gizmo is an adorable name for the little guy. |

sammy came with his name- he hadn't had it long-- maybe the 6 weeks he'd been in rescue- I didn't mind it & it suited him.
My previous dog was a rescue- former name was Zeus-- didn't suit him at all (he was a hyper, funny looking aussie ACD cross) he pretty much named himself Rowdy ![]() |

I think Gizmo suits your pup perfectly. I think Fudgie would be a stupid name for him...good perhaps for a different pet but not for this guy. He really does look like a 'Gizmo'.
I like choosing names that mean something. They're not always deep and thought provoking...just generally mean something to me. Lets see, I'll only mention names I gave pets after I grew out of that teenager stage (cause I was a stupid teen ). I had a cockatiel I named A.J.Rimmer, after my favourite character on my favourite TV show (Red Dwarf). Rimmer (the 'tiel) was a complete moron and nasty as hell, but also "all bark and no bite", if you get my meaning. Just like the tv character. Turns out of course that she was a female. Anyhoo, she ended up being my best bud and as lovey dovey as ever. My cats name was Grimalkin (Gri-mal-kin), called Grim for short. Now, that name was one that got some "you named him WHAT?" comments. But I named him that because Grimalkin was a grey cat from celtic mythology who possessed great power and Grim was a blue mackeral tabby (a lot of people call blue...grey) who put a spell on me the first moment I saw him. I loved him sooooooooooooo much. He's the best pet I've ever had. I've never regretted calling him Grimalkin, it suited him perfectly. My Chihuahua's name? Jesse James was named so because I wanted him to have a boys name without it being too 'tough' because I have this thing against naming little dogs with super tough names. I think it sounds moronic. I also didn't want a cutesy froo froo name, 'cause he's a boy dammit! LOL So I thought and thought and suddenly realised...Hey! I'm bustin' this boy outta prison (he was a rescue) so he's my little outlaw.....Jesse James. Kinda corny, I know. But that's how it came about. My two current 'tiels are named Daedalus and Icarus because I love that myth and it was one of the first greek myths that I learnt as a child. Plus, there is the feathers and flying connection. ROFL!!! Cass. |

Well...lets see:
-Bleu was named because of his BRIGHT blue eyes. -Shelby was a name we loved at the time she came into the picture. -Kylie, means narrow valley...and when we first got Kylie you could see EVERY bone in her body -Zoe, no clue...my mommy named her! -Jagger from the old t.v. show, Jag. -Kassia, mommy named her too! -Keegan, randomly picked a letter in the baby book....then a page, then went down the row w/ eyes closed and Keegan poped up...suits him well! -Cooper, his full name is Cooper Cane, after the Miami Hurricanes...big Canes family! -Luka, means gracious bringer of light, and Mr. Luka lit up our lives when he came into the picture! -Nicky, his story is different...I dont wanna go into the whole thing, but he was born in our first litter, went to live with another family at 8 weeks, came back to us at 3 months after being named Nickel...so we changed it to Nickelson and call him Nicky for short! -Lacee, when Lacee was born we gave her the puppy name Laci, and when we decided to keep her...we just changed the spelling. -Kambry, no clue...Mommy named her too! |

Actually the name 'Kylie' is Australian Aboriginal and it means 'Boomerang'. It's often sited as a "similar" name to 'Kyle' which is a gaelic name that means 'narrow valley', but unless it has roots somewhere else (which I'm not aware of) it's not the same and doesn't mean the same thing.
Eep! Sorry, I don't want to sound like the name police. Cass. |

Weellllll......
Charlie got his name because he just looked like a Charlie and at the time that I got him I was a single mom and I thought it would not hurt to have at least a mans name around the house for sticky situations...you know someone is at the door and I have to call "Charlie....door" granted the only thing that will happen is Charlie runs to the door to invetigate the person but still. Lexie....yeah....well, we just liked it. Not very creative. Bonzai....we named her Stocks and Bonzai call name Bonzai. We actually named her Bonzai before we came up with Stocks and Bonzai. She came upon Bonzai because you can almost see her yell out "BONZAI" before she jumps off of what ever she has climbed up on. Guinness got his name because we are planning on going top ten with him in about 2 years and so he is Guinness book of Ratcords....kind of silly I know but I like it! |

I work with kids with special needs and a little girl I worked with was named Emma. She was such a nice little girl. She had beautiful blonde hair. I thought my puppy was as beautiful as Emma.
I have also had a dog Popcorn because I like popcorn. Also Grimmy from the cartoon Mother Goose & Grim. |

I love all the names people picked! I have other animals, so I can share their names as well
![]() Beni (was my very first dog, a poodle-lhaso apso cross) - I had wanted a dog SO BAD but my mom wouldn't let us have one. My Dad thought kids should have a dog growing up so he brought one home. I wanted to name him Miracle, because to me it was a miracle that we got him in the first place! My brother was like 'uh... I don't think so'. Then I wanted to name him Benji (remember those movies?) and again my brother was like 'Uh... NO', but he settled on Beni because it sounded close to Benji. Felix - A cat, obviously lol. Honestly he's one of those typical snotty cats and he really didn't have much of a personality to base a name off of, so we decided on Felix the Cat. Sambuka (Sami for short) - Sam's a pure black cat. He might have like... 4 white hairs on his body. I didn't want to go the cheesy route and name him something like Midnight, Ebony or Onyx (no offence to people who do name their cats that, but I wanted to be different) So I decided on Sambuka. He's such a small cat that he never really grew into his name, so we call him Sami for short. ![]() |

Miss Fallon Dallon
|
I named Fallon after my favorite memeber of the band Kittie )ahe left the band). Then I named Talena after the other memember of Kittie that left that i liked. With Lucky he got named while I was at the vet. I said to the dog while in the vets office "you're lucky I found you" and the vet said that sounds like a good noame for him. Then it just stuck.
My cats: Gabriella, Gabby Kat or Tubby. She was named this casue shes calico and very fall time looking and the named seemed fall/witchy to me it just fit her. My cat 13 was named that casue she;s mostly black and she seemed like a number 13 cat... supersticious stuff.....I call her 13 kitties |

Golden Retriever
|
Lol...well, Shadow, my older golden, was named by me when I was six after the golden retriever from Homeward Bound. <3 Now I've come to find every other dog in the universe is named Shadow, whether or not they're black or a golden retriever. xD
Tajik was named Tajik when we got him. His first owner was from Tajikistan, and named him after her homeland. I love it, but it can be a pain. Unless they're the clever type, people always have trouble pronouncing it. ("...Tajeep?" "No, TajIK." "Oh...Tajeech?" "No....TajIK". "Ooooh! Tajish!" "....") So sometimes I just introduce him as "Taj". Though I myself call him all sorts of things...Tajik, Tajiky, Taj, Taji, Todd, Todder, Teek, Teeker, Tikk, Tikker, Teeky, Pawdeek, Tadeek, etc. Sam had fur the color of Sand, but me being the eight-yr-old I was thought Sand sounded stupid and Sandy was too girly, so we named him Sam. Simba, my sis's cat, was originally (well, after my grandma had him. No telling what his first owners called him) called Goldie, but we changed it to Simba when we got him, after the lion...king. xD He has this outrageous mane. He looks JUST like the cat in those Ionic Breeze commercials, if you've ever seen them. |

Pippin was named after Pippin the Hobbit from Lord of the Rings. =) I couldn't think of a name for him, and then on Christmas day we went and saw Return of the King. Pippin's my favorite Hobbit so I was like "Okay, his name is Pippin!" and it stuck.
My cat Chester was named after a band member's vocalist (a band I don't even like!) My dad was pestering me to name him, so I said I'll name him after the next band that came onto the radio, lol. My ex-hamster (RIP) was named Butters after the South Park character because he was the same color as Butters' hair. My lovebird is name Captain Blue Butt (I call him Blue for short) because he's got bright blue feathers on his tail. My other bird is named Kaola (Kay for short) after a radio host. |

Isabel's name came from the movie "Lady Hawk". I loved the name Isabeau. I figured no one would ever understand what I said or how to spell it if I called a dog Isabeau, so I changed it to Isabel. Now people can pronounce it, but no one can spell it.
I wrote Isabel's name down a year before I got her, along with a list of what I wanted in a dog. My sweet Jasmine was old and blind and deaf and I knew she would not be around too much longer, so I planned for a puppy. The minute I picked Isabel up, I knew she was truly Isabel and I took her home and she has been Isabel ever since. Samuel is my 7 month old kitten. I felt that Isabel needed a playmate and decided to get a kitten. I brought Samuel home from the Humane Society for Isabel to have a brother. His name came from one of my piano students. I have two sisters that I think of as my terrorists. One of them has the nickname Sammy and so the name Samuel came about for my kitty. . . . . . . since I sort of think of kitties as terrorists. ![]() |
