I wish the parents on my street taught their kids better. Simba is the only puppy on the street, and the other dogs (not many of them) are all pretty old. The kids all want to play with him. I wouldn't mind so much if they knew how to act.
They're even starting to come to my door asking to play with my puppy. err... I hate saying no, because i know when i was their age, I would just have loved to play with a puppy, but I wouldn't run away from a puppy. Simba swung his head back because his leg was itchy, and i guess it startled the kid, and he started to run away. Simba thought it was a game, so he chased after the kid. I mean, simba was on a leash, but these kids dont even know that if they don't know a dog they should let it sniff their hands first. I can't even walk Simba with out one of these kids following us. |

I'm not too nice to the kids on my street anymore when it comes to being around my dogs. I don't trust 'em. One kid threw rocks at Shiner because he didn't like her growling at him, and then recently another kid ran up to my fence, made Ripley bark, and then kicked at him because "he's gonna bite me!!" through the chain link fence.
The kids in Arizona aren't well-educated on the subject of dogs either... They think that a dog's favorite way to be petted is the "patta-patta-pat" on the head. They also think that dogs like to have their ears pulled. (Ripley's giant ears seem to be a target for most young kids, LOL) My method, sadly, is just to tell the untrustworthy neighborhood kids that "He bites" and not let them pet him.. I'm not patient enough to go over very clearly what I want them to do when they're near my dog, and then have them do everything BUT what I ask.. I like kids, and I like (love) dogs, but I DO NOT like both of them together. ![]() |

My neighborhood kids aren't that bad, they all have dogs, so they pretty much know how to play with them, their is this one girl that I baby-sit sometimes, I hate when she comes because she like pulls Joker head off because he doesn't want to run with her
I make her leave him alone |

When I take the pugs for a walk, it's like walking a kid magnet. Everyone wants to pet the cute little dogs with no noses LOL. I am tolerant to a point. When I ask them to stop, I mean stop NOW. If they don't, I get snippy, quick. I also dont tolerate the patting on their head. If they want to pet, they had better pet nicely.
They are never ever outside alone. I trust no one. Kids or adults. |

I'd encourage everyone to try and educate. Taking up some parent's responsibility may seem like a chore, but hey, do it for all the dogs that kid's going to come in contact with for the rest of it's life! Don't think of it as being extra patient with kids or educating them, think of it as protecting dogs everywhere!
I'm a spaz when it comes to people handling my dog incorrectly, and I get pretty tense when people don't touch or play with Missie the way I do. But the reality is, just because *I* handle and play with Missie one way, doesn't make everyone else's style wrong! Sure, I don't ruffle Missie's hair up or carry her with anything but two hands (not really. lol She fits under one arm quite nicely- it's everyone else that needs to handle her with 2. LOL). But that doesn't mean Missie loathes having her hair a mess (my male family members have a habit of doing this :P Dad doesn't mean to, he's just got big hands, so even when he's gently petting, her hair goes all over the place. lol And my brother enjoys rumpling the hair on her head, 'cause it makes ME whine. LOL). And it doesn't mean Missie doesn't like playing with things/in ways I don't play with her. As long as the dog's not being hurt or annoyed, let the kid play with him/her wierd! And short explanations as to why you don't do (this or that) to the dog (because it hurts and/or annoys him/her) are great. Tell kids that dog's ears are very sensitive, and if you pull on them, you hurt the dog. If the kid does it again, inform them that they will not be allowed to play with your dog if they hurt it, and follow up on that by leading your dog away if they do it again. Demonstrating how to handle and pet your dog is a great teaching tool, too. When you stop to let passerbys pet, pet your dog the way you want them to, and tell them why they should handle yur dog like that. It really doesn't take much time or energy to educate in little circumstances like that, and you're keeping your dog socialized while giving kids (and sometimes adults!) important skills, too. ![]() |

You are a very calm patient person to take that without knocking her teeth down her throat. Not to mention the "vicious" dog that licked the kid. I hate to see what that lady would have done if Osha had rolled over to have her tummy rubbed. She probably would have pulled out a gun. Ugh... People suck. (Except dog lovers. ) |

Dont get me started on kids not treating dogs well. I hate that when kids just run up and pet the dog, dont ask, then pat him on the head and get in his face....I had to walk away from a very good friend of mine cuz a random kid was getting in Kinos face. Elementary kids area taught about animals all the time, that should be part of the ciriculum (thats spelled wrong)...
We dont have many kids around here....mostly older people....there are kids next door in one of the apts, but they are NEVER outside...its a wierd family. And accross the street but they have a beautiful boxer. Everyone else is much olter then 50 |

We only have one young girl next door. She loves dogs, but her parents hate them. She always wants to come play with Taz and Princess, but her parents won’t let her near them. One day a few weeks ago, her grandparents where babysitting, and the grandfather brought her over. I started to tell her how to approach them, and she said "I know, there was a lady from the SPCA at my school who taught us about dogs". She did great
, put her hand out for them to smell, then patted their backs, and then their bellies(as soon as you pat them, they roll over for a belie rub LOL)I'm so glad I don't have the neighborhood kids some of you have ![]() |
