GIANT Alaskin Malamute
My fiance and I were just at Walmart, we got in the car and I see accross the parking lot this beautiful dog- I had said it was a Malamute. It looks a little big from the distance but nothing compaired to what it was....so we drive over to look at it, and this this is HUGE...his back was about the height of my car window. The guy told me its a Giant Alaskin Malamute, and thats its only 10 months old....he still had growing to do! He seemed well behaved and all...It was a beautiful dog.....I know people say that can be tempermental and all but no one can argue their beauty....this was one LARGE beauty...

My male Alaskan Malamute is a big boy!
I have 2 Alaskan Malamutes. My male - Yukon is 8 years old.
He is a very big dog - infact some well meaning people often say they think he is the biggest dog they have ever seen. He weighs in at 75 kilo ( sorry New Zealand is metric!). He has a huge head and very large bones in his legs. Our vet says he is not overweight - just big built. When Yukon gets going he is like a steam engine! Though Yukon is still "entire" and not keen on other entire males, he has the sweetest nature and is a big softy with people and dogs. We belong to the Alaskan Malamute club in New Zealand and he is much larger than alot of the other dogs at the club. |

It worries me that the guy plainly said the mal was a "Ginat Alaskan Malamute" rather than just saying he was large for his breed, are people breeding these huge beauties????????????
Rip, that "mini husky" you are talking about is the breed that Kymcole shows and breeds, they're officially called "Alaskan Klee Kais" (did I get it right this time Kim? LOL) |

I've seen two of these big guys! One was big and a bit overweight at 165 lbs, and the other one was just plain BIG!
Without running to my AKC book to read about weight ranges on these dogs, are these really big ones a specific "line" within the breed, or do they just show up extra large, from a regular sized line? I've always been curious about these super large dogs! I'm doggie-sitting one of my favorite big dogs this weekend. He's a Tibetan Mastiff named Yoghi. He is 2.5 years old, intact, and is around 120 to 130 lbs right now. His owner told me some members of this breed can get up to 180 lbs. That is one BIG dawg! ![]() |

Salem and OC - yep, there are definitely people breeding Giant Al Mals for profit. You should see some of the websites - vindictive and scary. Actually, there was a big hullaballo about the issue recently due to an unfortunate incident involving animals from a breeder that used to show AKC standard dogs and somehow fell off the bandwagon and into the money bins with these dogs. Let's just say that, as always, when you select for one trait and one trait only, you do so to the detriment of many others...temperament included. Very sad.

I saw a large Al Mal at the Mutt Strut I went to this weekend. His shoulders were above my hips! :O He must have weighed at least 150.
People are breeding large Al Mals just like they breed large Rottweilers... for looks. :\ |
