hi shandydoogy,

i, like you, want the best for my dog and have a well behaved socialized citizen. but, in my 4 years experience, having a dog increases the chances to get into trouble about 3 fold!

if my dog hadn't started to play with a hive of bees on the ground, we wouldn't have been chased for a quarter mile...

if my dog didn't jump into a creek to chase some ducks, i wouldn't have been cursed by passersbys for being cruel to ducks...

if my dog didn't rush up to sniff an english bull mastiff, he wouldn't have been bitten and had to be rushed to hospital...

the list goes on. life was much more peaceful before my dog, but a lot more fun after. maybe it's the same with kids, but with less violence.

Only if you have girls.....boys are worse about getting into things then the dogs! And I would not trade them for anything! I think that is why every little boy needs a dog.....they understand each other!

Dog parks can also be great in the "off hours". We have a shih tzu, rottweiler and husky. The first is too small for an active dog park, the rott is fine, but the husky bites when stressed (yes, he has bitten the other two, but no lasting damage) .We had no fenced yard so I would take my three down when noone else was around. They ran happily like banshees. Still need to have full vaccinations of course since the other dogs didn't necessarily take all their germs home with them. Now we have a huge fenced yard, but Spokane has no dog parks anyway.
