How Do They Know?
Hi there...just wondering
People will name their location either in their public profile or in different posts. But my question is, how do people know where you are located if you don't do either of those things. I joined another forum (not for dogs) and I never said where I was from. Most people on the forum are located in Europe and will constantly refer to transatlantic...(whatever we're talking about). I try not to use slang on said forum, so... is it that obvious? Not that it bothers me. I'm just curious as to how they're so sure where I'm from. Can any of yous tell where a person is located just by their posts? I know, I know. It's a weird question!!! But please don't yell at me, as I've been yelled at for asking questions like this. |

Well, if they looked up your IP address, which is usually accessible to other members, they could see it originated from a US based server.
Language and idiosyncracies of language are often a huge flag as to where people come from. What you may not even consider slang can be a clue, and grammar is also used differently in different areas. Be glad that you are a member of such an intuitive group of people! |

Spelling is a huge give away too. Americans are easy to pick even if you only have their spelling to give you any clues. LOL
Yup, Americans are usually easy to pick, most of you DO use slang, even if you don't realise it. Plus, most of you think that the internet is exclusively for you. So any references to business, products, groups, organisations are generally American. Cass. |

Yup deffinately obvious! hehe It's amazing how much slangone uses without knowing or doesn't even realize that it is slang! Also some words are used more often in some countries than in others.

LOL... Cass, I can always tell you and Linnie too. They way you express things is sometimes very noticable... and oh yes, I am vastly aware that Americans think they are the only ones on the net. I always try and speak globally, but, it's difficult. You rarely think outside of the state lines, and never the country lines...
Thanks for mentioning it, I will try and be more aware. It's not polite to exclude others, but I think Americans are developing that mind set. Too bad. |

Matters like these can be quite interesting, as well as frustrating, to say the least.
I wonder if anyone can guess where I'm from, or better yet, what race I belong to! Now now, no cheating! Hmm...I wonders if these es going be a new game her in GP for members to guess each others place. That will be fun! ![]() |
