Leaving my dogs for the first time
Hey guys, I am leaving my doggies for the first time. I am going away for the Thanksgiving Holiday. I am really worried about leaving them, I will be gone for about a week and a half. There will be family members coming in and letting them out and feeding them but I am not used to being away from them for this long. Can anyone give me some advise on how my dogs can cope with me not being here, (I also need some advise) Might sound really stupid but yeah okay. Any comments would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks, ~Crys~ |

I'd practice a little bit a few times first....like leave for shorter periods of time and ask the same people who will be coming to care for them to pop in and spend 15 minutes with them even...let them out, give them a treat, play for a minute. And then leave so they're alone for a while. How do they do alone when you're gone for the day or for some hours during the day? If they're OK with that, it shouldn't be too bad. But a little taste of what it will be like to have someone else coming to care for them would do them good.
They'll be all right as long as they get some exercise, attention, a little companionship and so forth. Maybe when your relatives come to take care of them, they could hang out and watch TV or something for a while so the dogs don't get too lonely. You could bribe your caregivers with some tasty treats so they have something to snack on while they're there. |

Is there anyone who could stay at your house to take care of them? Either way, I'm sure they will be just fine. It's a lot like taking your kid to school for the first time.

Carrie is right! Start getting them use to it right now, a little at a time, that way they will not be so stressed when the time comes.
I don't want to be a stick in the mud and everybody has different views I'm sure, but I find a week and a half an awfully long time to leave pets alone at home, even if family members come in to feed and play. Are there any places where you live that would house your pets for a reasonable fee? I'm not familiar with your area, of course, but I know here we have kennels where pets can be housed, taken for walks etc. for about 12.00$ a day ( I also know the people who run these place and have learned to trust them.) That way, you know your pets are always under supervision by trained personnel. It's just that at home you never know what can happen and your pets are unable to take care of the situation i.e. fire, break-in, whatever. It can be an expensive altenative but for me that's the only ... I would be to worried and you never know if family can indeed come over at regular times. It's just another option to consider, in any event I'm sure you will do what feels right for you...everybody is different. ![]() |
