homemade training treats

I made some liver treats this afternoon and did they ever turn out well!!
Both Sammy and my cat (who is very picky) were going crazy for them sa were the dogs at the park.
They were dirt cheap to make and I'm well stocked for a LONG time. The texture turned out well too-- dry enough to go in your jeans pocket but still soft in the middle which Sammy loves .
Here's my recipe in case anyone wants to try it out:

2 lbs chicken liver
2eggs
1tsp minced garlic
pureed those 3 ingredienst in the blender
then mixed in 3 cups flour
stirred it up, spread 1/2 the batter in a 9X11 pan
baked it at 325 in my oven for a long time and then sliced it into bite sized pieces yum yum yum

I'm a pretty sad cook so i'm pretty happy they turned out
The only downside-- now my house smells like liver

Mmmmm...liver treats.

Don't feel too bad about the smell, I'm cooking corned beef and cabbage tonight. PU!

I don't know, I think you and Carrie should have a bake-off. Lyric says her treats are to die for!

This thread is making me hungry as I am highly food motivated.

I have never timed it but I always wait until the edges have all pulled away from the pan. If you try to take it out too early it sort of comes apart as if the top is a skin and peels off from the middle. I also forgot to mention to grease and flour the pan.
These treats are such a standby now. They are still the dog,s favorite. Some people I train with who also show in conformation cut them into bigger peices, I make mine tiny. huh, I kjust noticed this thread was started last August time flies.

I tried these treats last night. My dog absolutely loves them. He kept barking for more as I was putting them in storage bags. What is the best way to store these treats refrigeration, freezer. How long do they usually last, that is not in the dogs mouth LOL. I don't know if they would get moldy if left out for a long period of time. If they had some kind of shelf life it would be great. Thanks for sharing, and my dog also thanks you.

That sounds just about exactly like the recipie I use, only mine is smaller....1LB chicken livers, 1 egg pureed in blender....2 cups oat flour (or any flour) baked in 350 F oven for about 30 minutes or until sides pull away from edges of pan. I toss in a little parmessan cheese to make it even more smelly. LOL.

I'm sticking this in GP where more people will see it.

I put them in freezer bags (sandwhich size) - I keep a weeks worth in the fridge and freeze the rest. How long they last just depends on how many you dole out/ how much training with food you're doing.

I use the same recipe with whole wheat flour for darker treats which can double as tracking bait, but the first time I made them I used apple cider vinager as well, that really intensifies the stink factor while baking. NEVER again have I or will i put that in there.

Do you mind if we add this recipe to our recipe section. It would make a great addition.

My MIL has a recipe she shared with me which is similar but we use a can of salmon instead of liver. The dogs go NUTS over it.

If you're asking me- of course you can put it in. It's certainly not an original recipe. I got it from someone at ourdogsonline or thedogfoodproject. I think it's been around dog circles for years. I have heard other people substitute other things for the liver. I'm not brave enough to experiment.
