Help -my dog's an alcoholic!
I wasn't quite sure where to put this...
My area is a rendezvous for people who want to go and get drunk. It is perfectly normal and very nice -except on Friday and Saturday nights. Then the square and the streets around it fill up with teenagers who go to stuff themselves full of alcohol, be sick and vandalize everything. (Let it be understood that I'm not attacking teenagers -I'm one myself- only the idiots.) In the morning the square is covered in broken glass, littered with bottles of beer and half full glasses of calimocho, a mixture of coke and cheap wine. Occasionally you find someone's been sick. Anyway. Yesterday my mum took Finn out to have a pee and a poo in the square, which he's been doing for over a month now, and while he was wandering around exploring he discovered a pool of calimocho and began to lick at it (urgh). By the time my mother found out and removed him it was too late. Since then, every time we've taken him out, he (with or without a small delay) makes a beeline for the spot. Finn calls to be let out whenever he needs a pee. Though he's not exactly continent, he can at least feel it coming. But know he's started calling just to go out and head for the calimocho, and we don't know which is which. I haven't the foggiest idea of what to do, other than hoisting him up as soon as he goes near it and dumping him a few metres away. Trouble with that is he inmediately turns round and heads straight for it again. Perhaps I should call Alcoholics Anonymous. |

i would consider calling the police to patrol your area on fri and sat nights. tell them what goes on there. maybe they can cut some of it out. other than moving, this would be the only thing i could tell you to do. keep him on a leash when you take him out and dont let him run loose. he could also get cut with the broken bottles, you know. good luck! and yes dogs do seem to be attracted to alcoholic beverages and such.

I agree with the others. Be careful with that broken glass and who knows what else.
Dogs like alcohol because it's sweet. My daugher knocked over her glass of blended (home grown) raspberry marguirita on my lawn one summer and the Chihuahuas got into it before she had a chance to clean it up. One of them got tipsy. I was not happy about that. I tend to lose respect for drunkeness, especially in youngsters. LOL. |

What part of Spain do you live? I lived in Madrid for three years and didn't want to leave. I still want to go back to Spain to live. I LOVE that country. You sound English, not Spanish.
![]() Anyway back to your dilemma. Finn isn't an alcoholic, he just likes sweet things. My little Yorkies are NUTS for any kind of soda. That sounds like a very dangerous situation with the teens and I would be calling the police each and every time they come around there to party. Keep Finn on a leash and take him somewhere else to potty till this situation is corrected. |

I would say a leash should easily solve your problem.
We used to have a dog that lived with us that loved beer. If you left your drink unattended for even a minute he would knock it over and drink it. |

Yeah...lots of animals like beer. I think it's the brewer's yeast in it.

We've got him on a leash now. Trouble is he killed it yesterday.

Anaconda,
you have very good english for growing up in Spain. I assumed you were american! Sorry you are having problems in your area on the weekends. I think it would scare me to have all those drunks milling around. I am so glad Finn recovered from Parvo!!!! I'm sure he is just drinking to celebrate!!! LOL...just kidding. |

Urgh...Axa is a wannabe drunk. It's very tedious having to watch your dog every second of every party you have....and of course the drunken kids(or adults) think its a good laugh that the GSD drinks beer.....::sigh:: I am young(not a teen but a few years older) and I do have the occasional party...but ever since Axa my party life has been cut short.....oh well. The only thing I can suggest is maybe distractions? A fun toy maybe? Or perhaps (this is what I do with Axa) give him a command when near alchohol and reward with something better....say a peice of hot dog or perhaps a nice jute roll...
works for me ![]() |
