Any Bearded Collie owners here??
We just adopted a Bearded Collie mix yesterday.....its a long story as to why I came home with a dog...when I just went with a friend to help her pick out a kitten!!! (I have no will power is the problem!)
Anyhoo, I am now the proud owner of a 2yr. beardie mix. We are going to call her "Lola" (she responds very well to it!). She is smaller than the standard beardie, from what I am learning. And the only diff. in her appearance from that of a PB beardie is her tail does not lay..it stands up. She is a doll, and is getting along wonderfully with Boomer, and she has the sweetest most gentle disposition with the kids, and me and hubby. Shes a real love bug! So I would love info, or to chat with another Beardie owner. I have NO experience with this breed...but am learning fast to love them! I will post pics later! |

Hey Dog_Tired congratulations on getting Lola, she sounds a doll
. i posted a while back now asking the same question. i don't have a beardie myself but my boyfriend has one called Kira (5 years old now i think) and she is a fantastic dog and sounds a lot like Lola in that she is a real love bug too! She is very well behaved (most of the time) lol Her only real downfalls are cats, motorbikes and fireworks. If she sees any of them you have had it becasue she will go wild sometimes. I have uploaded a pic of her with my dog charlie, it isnt the best picture of her but at leat shes having fun. most of the pics from that day turned out to be grey blurs as she was running by!! lol Sharon and Charlie |

Thanks for the reply Sharon! Kira is a neat looking dog. I am thinking once Lolas hair grows some she will look like a little miniature 'beardie'. She has been an angel so far. And her only issue has been the cat. She doesnt seem aggressive with him..but she is curious. She got introduced to him last night and the cat was not really happy, but he has experience with dogs....so he let her sniff him..and then went his way. Today though, she chased the cat out the door, and across the lawn. So she may have to be watched with the cat some. I dont think the cat is going to let her get close enough anyway!
Thanks for the info! I am just loving having this girl here...now if I could just get Boomer to calm down...<sigh> all in due time I suppose!! |

Yeah my boyfriend has similar issues with his cat and Kira. Luckily for the cat but unfortunatly for him Kira doesn't live with him as he got her with an ex and when they split up Kira went with her. He has her over every week though and gets to take her on massive runs and she LOVES it. Even picked up a lovely habbit of rolling in cow dung lol
If you let Lolas hair grow just be careful with the grooming, they have a drop down coat like Shih Tzus so it gets knots and tats pretty easy. Poor Kira doesnt get a lot of grooming when she isn't with her dad and some of the knots she gets are just terrible. My boyf spends hours after her run trying to get as many knots out as he can and usually has to cut them out. She just loves life though and is far too concerned with playing and loving people to give them a second thought. they really do have fantastic temprements. Please try and show some pics of your new girl i would love to see what she looks like Sharon and Charlie |

Sure thing! I have a couple of shots I uploaded yesterday...her coat is shorter than I think I would like...but I am thinking..after looking at some pics of other beardies..that I might try to keep her at puppy length (if that makes any sense.) Just a little longer than it is now...and the hair on her cheeks and beard area...could be shorter for my taste...seeing as how when she drinks her little face and chin are really wet. And then she gets really long strands that are all dirty and brown. But her coat is really nice and soft...and I got a free grooming coupon for adopting her...so we will see what the groomer does. Her little nails need a trim...and I bet the groomer has a better way of getting the stain off of her face.
Thanks for your insight...we are starting to see a little more of her personality....she is a fast little booger, and likes to run full speed through the house. ![]() ![]() |

Aw what a gorgeous face she has!! I love her BIG brown eyes. On that top picture you can really see the beardie in her cant you? I have the same wet chin problem with my tzu, he has a habbit of going to a big sloppy drink and coming back and covering me with VERY wet kisses....ewwwww lol
They are very fast dogs, in the pic i posted poor Charlie is trying with all his might to keep up with Kira as she strolls along lol There are products you can get online or in many pet shops that will reduce the red tint staining on her "chops" if you want to get rid of it. I know some tzu owners who have the same problem and there are some real good products out there now. Kepping her in a puppt cut will be SO much easier for you, you wont have to deal with all those knots and tanlges and i bet she will be happy about less grooming, shes far too busy having fun by the sounds of it lol Sharon and Charlie P.S is that your son in the 2nd pic??? it looks as though they get on great together!!!! very cute ![]() |

Yes, that is my youngest son. I have two boys...and they are getting along great with Lola.
Thanks for the tips about the shampoo for the stains. I am considering getting the hair on her face trimmed some. Its pretty long...and she gets REALLY wet after drinking. Plus I think it will make her face look much nicer. I have a free grooming coupon from adopting her..and when I take her, I will ask them to trim her face. And yes, she is a fast little fart! She will "fly" around the backyard...doing circles almost around our Big Guy Boomer! She is a riot~ Your little Charlie is adorable BTW!! That face of his is too cute! |

Some breeds are just more prone to that beard staining.... it is the ph level of the saliva, as well as the type of hair that contributes to it.
There have been tons of people trying for so long to prevent beard staining in my breed, oes, but no one has managed to completely. Your dog doesn't look very stained at all to me. Very cute ![]() Fresh water in a metal or ceramic (not plastic) bowl seems to help. Keeping the bowl washed daily helps too, reduces bacteria. If you happen to have a hand towel hung near the bowl, I find if you just give the beard a quick rub dry after they drink helps. Of course you'll never be able to do it everytime they drink, but whenever you're nearby. A blueing agent shampoo, meant for people with silver, grey, or white hair, helps. It's nice for all over the dog, but if you put a little in a spray bottle with water and do a weekly beard touch up it will keep it clean longer. ![]() |

Hi All
I'm new to this site but thought I'd post here as it seems appropriate! We have 2 beautiful Beardies, a boy and a girl. We are waiting for the vet to give us confirmation that Lucy-Belle is expecting puppies. It will be our first Beardie litter and fingers crossed, they will be due around mid-January. The picture on my avatar is our boy, Texas. As for grooming: We don't clip Lucy but Tex has a heavier and thicker coat which just gets badly matted however much we brush him. Both dogs like mud, swimming, rolling in all sorts of unsavourary items, and therefore we clip Tex into a puppy cut. Beardies coats don't fully settle down until they are around 5 years old and hopefully he'll lose some of that soft downy undercoat which seems to be the source of the trouble. Our dogs are fine with cats, horses, other dogs, livestock etc because they have been introduced to them whilst young. Lucy doesn't like fireworks and thunder and she goes off to hide. Luckily she didn't transfer her fear to Tex as he is fine with all noises. Both of the dogs are fantastic with the kids. Not a growl, nip, nasty reaction whatever they try and do to them. We couldn't wish to have more kid-friendly dogs. More so than Lucy, Tex likes to use his voice quite a lot. Of course it all comes from his breeding as they were used to assist the Scottish Hill Farmers, and unless they communicate by voice, the Farmer wouldn't know where to locate the dog on the misty hillsides. Once we got used to it, we now accept it as part of who he is. Tex only shouts at us when he is interacting (such as stick throwing or playing ball), otherwise he is generally quiet. We wouldn't change our chosen breed apart from Hubby who wants a Jack Russell when he finishes work for his retirement. I won't comment on that! |
