Keyas ears

Did you have any problems with your GSD ears not wanting to come up right away? Keya is going on 10 wks and I am just wondering when they will start coming up?

Thanks!!

Wendy

My GS pups ears were up by 12 weeks. Sometimes they come up and go back down during teething or they don't come up till after teething. Some only have one up and one down or none up at all. Some things you can do to encourgage the ears to come up is to add some cottage cheese or yougert to the diet. Also if they start to come up don't play with them, ie. folding them backwards etc. There is some thought that if you do you will damage the vessels and the ears will drop again. Also give good chewing toys that work the whole front body assembly. This will strengthen the jaws and may also help the ears to go up.

I wouldn't worry too much, lots of pups don't have their ears up at 10 weeks. Particularly if they have ears that are on the larger side. They should start coming up in the next few weeks. 10 weeks old is still very young to worry about ears. If they're not up in about 2 months, then you should start looking into having them taped. This applies to those that in the US but im not sure about us in the UK, well that's what a friend told me who knows his stuff about the breed.

I love German Shepherds and what a beautiful pup in your avatar .

Hi All, I am only new to this forum and wanted to say hello to all the GSD owners here. I currently have 8 GSD'S at home and hopefully a litter on its way.

Keyas-mom if you haven't already try feeding raw bones to your gorgeous baby this will help stimulate the ear muscles while your puppy is teething. But the ears will go up and down till approx.6 months of age, so don't be concerned yet....Your puppy is very cute

We have had 3 American shepherds and they have been much less active, less drive. The European shepherd we have is just 3 1/2 months old and is short haired and has high drive. She requires a firmer hand to keep her in line especially when she sees new people or our cats. We are going back to the kennel where we got her from to get extra help training her. She learns rapidly, loves new experiences.

I'm just jumping in here, but I just saw the questions about their ears standing up. I have a question myself. My puppy's right ear was almost completely up, when one day, we find the ear COMPLETELY down, like a labrador's or something. He is now 10 weeks old, and his ear really doesn't look too good.

@ctfant
yeah you are right european have a much higher drive, but this comes a lot from the breeding requirements in the workinglines... even in the "show lines" are working dogs... of course there are easy going ones too, but most of them need a firm hand and a job... or they are in for a lot of mischieve... ;-)

with short hair you mean stockhair???
