Sneezing (mine)

My sheltie goes barking wild when I sneeze. My previous sheltie did, also. I mean, they bark so hard and so much they fly right up off the floor. Does anyone know why they do this and how to stop them?

The only reason I can come up with is that they don't like the noise or it startles them.

Can you start giving them a treat when you sneeze so they start thinking of sneezing as a good thing not a bad?

I agree with River. I think probably it is because it's a sudden noise that startles them.

Maybe toss a treat any time you sneeze, so they see that when they hear that noise... something good comes out of it.

Or, toss the treat before you sneeze, just so you don't possibly reward them for barking when you sneeze.

Red face

Thanks for the suggestions. But perhaps there is more to it than just startling him. When my husband sneezes, the dog doesn't pay any attention to it. I may test 'give a treat before the sneeze', and I'll post the results.

You know how they say your heart stops when you sneeze? And some dogs are trained to sense a siezure coming on? I wonder if there is any connection that way; i.e., he knows my heart is going to stop and it scares him? Or is this just a figment of my imagination?

Anybody else have dogs that bark when someone sneezes?

Hello,,, I will toss by word in here. I am not a dog talker per say but, I understand that it is more than that! I was told in a few dogs when one sneeze's it is a signal of need attention to to a situation... I don't know like If I said to you fire in the room. I got your attention. I have had to date 5 Shelties soon to be 6 and out of all of these Two have had this result to get in your face when you sneeze. I am not at all sure about this but out of all of them they were alfa furbies... So it is an attention signal.... I hope this is of help. I know our male T.J. Laddy he dose this huffing sound when barking it is alot like the sneeze . He tries to get all around him attention to what is bothering him... LASER
