Possible new herding dog

As I have explained in my post in the intros I told you all that i don't include Dudley our ACD/BC when I usually talk about my dogs. And so I usually say i only have 4. This is because Dudley is NOT a pet and is a strictly working dog and spends all his days and nights outside guarding or herding our cattle and sheep. Dudley is 9 years old and we're thinking its about time we get anouther herding dog to be his back up when he can no longer do the job anymore. Little Bit our 8 year old Saint often helps Dudley drive the cattle and sheep but he is'nt a constant partner.

We even may possibly bring in two more herding dogs or one primarly flock or herd guard and one herder and guarder. We have the money and time on our hands as all our dogs are well trained and adults. We're not sure when we will be doing this but it is going to happen. We're undecided on what we want. Here are the following breeds we are considering. We also may just rescue as Dudley was a rescue and is one of the best herding dogs ever.

So we obviousely have all windows open.

Don't forget to look into the Great Pyrenees and Kuvasz as livestock guardians.

It seems like you might want one of each -- a herder and a guard. Maybe an Australian Shepherd and one of the others? I know of some great success stories with Anatolian Shepherd Dogs and Great Pyrenees.

And not to be morbid, but maybe get two dogs with varying life expectancies, so you aren't training two dogs at the same time down the road.

Corsos can both herd and guard! My corso herds dogs at the dog park, she isnt invited there anymore. Dogs dont like being herded by other dogs. These are things you learn at the dog park.

I have considered Corsos and my boyfriend is pretty interested in them. But he hops around alot typical man lol. We did however this evening go out to our friends house whos Entelbuch Mountain Dog Tinkerbelle recently had a litter of 12 pups! Their only a week old but are just adorable and they breed their dogs for livestock guarding purposes ultimatly. We talked and i think we are going to end up with one of Tinks pups.

As far as herding goes, I'll have to put a vote in for the Kelpie. I know it's a patriotic thing for me to say, but they're (IMO) the best sheepdogs in the business.

You might also want to consider a Samoyed. They are a bigger dog that was bred to do everything from sled pulling, hunting, and herding to protecting the villages and livestock.

Here is a link to the "Working Samoyed" organization. This will give you more info and and idea as to how versatile these dogs really are!

I am a big border collie fan...in my opinion there is no better breed than the border collie!! Awesome herders and great guard dogs, the most amazing temperaments and personalities.

OK I will pipe up here..... I did not hear a Sheltie mentiond here at all..... I know they will not guard........ Hmmmmmm But they are sturdy and well documented for hearding in even the roughest places on this earth. They are quick due to their size and learn real quick.... I think an Entelbucher is a great choice! Enjoy your pup!

I also think the Rottweilers are underused as working/stock dogs...and they thrive on it.

There was a man at the beach yesterday who had a 15 week old Maremma pup. CUTE!

BC's are not normally used as guard dogs. What kind of livestock? Sheep, cattle, ect? BC's are used more on sheep vs cattle, although its not saying they cant work cattle. Aussies are a tougher dog used more on cattle, but can work sheep. So it depends on what you are looking for. BC's work on stock with presence and pressure, Aussies are looser but can get down and dirty

I have 3 herding breeds, the BC, and ACD, and a Sheltie, and I would have to say of the 3, the ACD is probably best suited for being a guardian and a herder, more so than a BC. But both are very good at what they do.
